Try resetting the ipod. try this button combination:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Hello,
just reboot your iPod, that will fix it. (It will NOT cause you to delete your music etc., it's totally safe)
Press the center circle button together with the (top of clickwheel) 'Menu' button for about 7-8 seconds untill the Apple logo pops up

My Apple ipod nano 16 GB MC694LL/A is having volume issues, it will only stay on one level and if I try to turn it down it will not go back up and if I try to turn it up it will not change. Also my screen,...

Hi - Sounds like it may need to be reset. Here's how:

  • Connect your iPod to the power cord for at least ten minutes before resetting.
  • Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button AND the Volume Down button - together - until you see the Apple logo appear. When you see the Apple logo appear, let go of the keys.
  • Connect the iPod to your computer and make sure it appears in iTunes.
See if that helps. If not, leave another message - there's another procedure you can also do, but it's a little more complicated.

How to reset my ipod nano??..model no-A1137

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button simultaneously for at least eight seconds or until the Apple logo appears. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above step did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.

Off and on

The following text is from:http://ipod.about.com/od/tes1/a/turn_off_nano.htm
Turning off the iPod nano How do I turn off the iPod nano then, you may be asking? You let it, or make it, go to sleep.
The iPod doesn’t really work in terms of on and off. Instead it only deals in awake or asleep.
If you use your iPod for a minute or two and then set it aside, you’ll see its screen start to dim, and then eventually go black altogether. This is the iPod going to sleep. When an iPod is asleep, it uses much less battery power than when the screen is lit up and the music playing. By letting your iPod sleep you conserve your batteries for later.
You can also force it to go to sleep by holding down the play/pause button for a few seconds.
Keeping Your iPod Asleep If you press any button on your nano when it is asleep, the screen will light up quickly and your iPod will be awake and ready to rock.
If you plan not to use your iPod for a while and want to store it, you can make sure that you conserve battery power and keep your iPod from playing a concert to the inside of your backpack by engaging the hold switch.
