Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

My CD/DVD drive/burner does not work, nor does my laptop recognize it. It does not recognize a driver for it either. I downloaded a driver from gateway, however, this did not work. I cannot backup anything onto disc or download anything onto disc. This began a week after I purchased my computer.

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

My cd drive doesn't recognize any media, even though my hardware manager says it's working fine. Computer is a Gateway GT5062E. Suggestions on where to start would be wonderful. Thank you

make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall
hope this helps

I had installed 123 Copy DVD to my Dell Dimension B110, XP, and it had issues from the begining, had to keep clicking over and over to get my DVD burner to recognize the blank DVD+RW disc, but I was able...

Go into the properties for the CD/DVD drive and see that if it says "this device is working properly". Also, find out what type of (brand) the CD/DVD drive it is, and download the drivers for it. It will not run without the drivers (as I'm sure you know).

Also, restart the computer and press the F command shown at bottom of screen to enter setup. Once in setup, select each file menu and press F9 to set the default settings. Do this for each file menu, and then select exit - exit and save changes (settings).

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP. My DVD-CD

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.

If you go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager. You can roll back to your previous driver. Unless of course it wasn't working then either. In that case disregard this solution : )

CD & DVD player driver

Laser failure is very common on CD and DVD players/recorders, they are very easy to change and very inexpensive these days.
I keep three or four of this one on the shelf in my workshop all the time.

The beauty of this one is that it comes with both a black and a beige bezel to suit most machines, it is also a "retail" version so it comes with burning and playback software, not all burning software will recognize all burners and often people phone me up asking why the new burner they have bought (OEM) will not burn, infact their burning software cannot even recognize their new burner.
Also some burners do not recognize all makes of CD and DVD disks, I have yet to come accross a make of disk that that Liteon doesn't burn with no problems.
