The thumb drive might have some fault. Plug it in other OS mainly windows XP and Linux. If still same problem persists after tried in Linux, problem is with pen drive. You can ask for a replacement from the dealer as it has guarantee for 5years.
If it is Win XP with SP1 ( check this - tight click My Computer, click Properties and check if it is Service Pack 1), then you need the latest SP from microsoft (that is SP3).
WinXP not recognizing USB drives, the SP is the most common cause I have seen. Update to SP3 and it should solve your problem.
insert your pen drive again and see whether your system recognize it. go to my computer and right click on the pendrive icon and select format , then clink ok.
