Usually a router has additional networks ports for ethernet cable and not a usb port. Is this a dsl or cable modem?

It could be a faulty eternet port on the modem.

If you followed the instructions on the setup Cd that came with the router and it isn't picking up. Chances are the modem needs to be replaced.

Aother thing you could try is taking a crossover ethernet cable (not a standard one) and plug it into the network port in the back of your computer. See if it detects it. If it doesn't detect than it is the modem. If it does then the modem port on the router could be bad.

Make sure its a crossover ethernet cable and not a standard one.

Can get router to connect to Internet

Cathy, your router does not connect to the internet, your modem does. Are you trying to use wireless, or is it hard wired like using an eithernet cord? If so then make sure the eithernet cable is hooked up properly and that it is goodIf it is good then try to connect your modem directly to your computer by using the eithernet cable. If that works then you know that the signal from and too your computer is working properly. Next go to your control panel and open network and sharing center. Go to set up a new connection. If that doesn't work then you might suspect a defective router. By the way has it worked before or is this a new setup?

In order to help you through this you need to be more specific with what is going on with your system. What brand of router is it? Depending on what brand there is a web address you can use to be able to access your modem.

Good luck,

Marty

My wireless router says its connected but local only no internet and i know the ether net cable is good bc i can use the cable but not the wireless router

You can plug your computer directly into the modem bypassing the router if you wish.

You have a commercially prepared eithernet cable? I doubt it is faulty unless you have abused it.

A tester for eithernet is available at the big box store for about $50.00 if you need to test it. (buy another cable instead - save $40.00)

I have a Linksys router and it really dosn't tell me a lot about hooking it up! Can anyone help? MDL# EZXs55W It is a five port. The tech connected the cable and the eithernet cable to the modem. I tried...

Great !

But if you have trouble installing the cd, follow these instructions:
Router setup
You do not have to use the cd.

Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Connecting a wireless router to Tiscalli broadband connection

  1. USB modem is connecting a PC USB port with a DSL phone line: CANNOT be connected to a ROUTER LAN (ethernet NOT USB port).
  2. Wireless ROUTER is NOT a modem and it CANNOT connect the Internet (or WAN) LAN port to any "phone line"
  3. Connect the Router Internet (WAN) port to Modem (you need a LAN MODEM = a modem with a LAN/ETHERNET port)
  4. Be sure your internet is running before strting ROUTER configuration with Router Company CD
