7 - kernel - HDD timeout
Most of the times, the IDE cable is not properly connected when you see this error. Please reattach the ide cable. Not only to the harddisk drive but also to the dvd drive. Also try to reconnect the ide cable to the motherboard.
There are 6 star drive screws on the bottom of the Xbox. Four under the rubber pads and 2 more under the stickers. If you remove these, the top should come off. Make sure all of the cables are tight (unplug it first!).
If this doesn't work, there are ways to fix it, but it involves building a computer chip with parts from Radio Shack and soldering wires into the Xbox in order to get a 'code' that allows you to replace the hard drive. The good thing is that used Xboxes are getting pretty cheap, I've seen them as low as $50.
