You need to download the SATA drivers for the motherboard you are using, save them to a floppy (after decompressing them), or a CD or a USB stick if the motherboard supports that. Install windows XP and at the prompt "Press F6 if you want to install any raid drivers...." press F6 and allow the computer to find the drivers, the disc will now be recognised
You need a Windows XP service pack 3, or you need to put the sata driver on a floppy and install according to the F6 option at the start of the Windows installation, or you could looke trough the BIOS's option to find something that relates to EMULATING IDE from SATA eg: SATA AHCI mode you lose a bit in performance but it workes every time...

Some of the motherboards treat SATA as a seperate controller, hence you need to change the BIOS settings to emulate IDE settings or while installation you can press F6 while the installation starts and give the driver disk (XP accepts only Floppy disk with the driver files copied in the required format).
