have swapped hard drive from the machine with the problem into an identical machine and problem does not occur in identical machine - so problem is likely hardware driven in problem machine. No apparent shorts - suspect either power supply overheating or possibly CPU overheating - latter seems unlikely since the fan is running unless the cpu is bad. Machine does not have all that many hours on it.

I would reccomend making sure nothing is shorting anything out on the motherboard or behind it. make sure the power supply cable is in firmly on both ends and make sure the power supply is good

I highly dought that a patch would fix it to me this sounds like a hardware problem, well when i restarts does it show windows is shutting down or does it act like the power cable was pulled type shut down/lose of power shut down?

Dell XPS 630i on start up goes into Configuration Updates...Fails and states "Updates were not configured correctly. reverting changes". Will shut down randomly.

If your computer is shutting down randomly and not because it is doing a post update restart, it may be worth giving the interior a clean as it could be overheating from dust build up in the fans and heatsink. Before you do that make sure you use a soft paint brush and that the power is disconnected from the computer. Be gentle with the brush as the capacitors are delicate and important.

Random Restart or Computer Freeze

what you did is OK for minor fixes. mostly for application error.
you need to format the hard drive and install the OS again in order the OS to work properly. you may have some file that is left over that is cusing the shut-down.

Random restarts..blue screen of death

It sounds like a RAM issue. I'd check for excessive heat inside the case. Possibly a bad case fan or the like.

Have you made any changes lately that could have caused these problems?

Saitek ST30 joystick randomly restarting my computer when i lanch a game. Its plug and play so there are no drivers (Other than the MS ones, which i do have installed).

Try uninstalling the joystick both physically and the driver then reboot. Open the game after the reboot and see if the computer restarts. If it does, then it may be something other than the joystick. I would also try other games if at all possible.

I believe this is a common issue with VAIOs -
overtemping and shutting down.

Does the cooling fan run?
