SOURCE: what is the p7 connector on a atx-1956-d for?

This is not a problem, and as it sounds, is not used in your system.

Some video cards have such huge processing power that they need thier own supply, as it would draw too much current from the motherboard otherwise. Below is a web site which reinforces this information, and gives an explanation of each connector.

Or do I not understand you. Do you have one less, or one too many?

Regarding 250W SMPS

250 watt is low under any circumstances, I'd upgrade atleast to a 450 or higher, around 650watt to be extra safe.

What power supply is the best

OCZ, Corsair, Thermaltake, CoolerMaster, Antec (voted 'most reliable power supply' by pcworld france), Enermax, Zalman. Any of these brands should do fine.

Don't buy a cheap one. Expect top ay between $60 and $150 in the US for a power supply)

Also, buy one that has a bit more power than the one you're replacing

Gateway 3310s desk top computer power supply

Hello,

You can replace the pc with the same watt power supply or upgrade to around 420W and still be able to run your system within thermal threshold. The power supply should be a 20-pin ATX power supply.

Good Luck

Do I upgrade my Power Supply

A new power supplu can't hurt anything so long as it's right for your Dell. Some Dells with ATX power connectors are wired in a propiretary way. Make sure which way yours is wired before making the buy.

Psu replacement

The PS should have the model number and power rating on a label.
Check that and measure the dimensions of the PS.
Enter the model number in a Google search and you should be able to find a replacement.
Then you can shop around and get a PS that has the correct dimensions to fit your case.

Try this cross reference:

I have a Gateway 510xl and would like to upgrade the power supply

Changing out power supplies is not that difficult task. Upgrading to a 550 Watt power supply would be a good idea because it will give you more power than you need at the moment. You can google the power supply with the word problems with it and see what comes up. The main thing to be sure of when selecting a new power supply is to make sure that you get one with the appropriate connectors for your hard drive, motherboard and processor. For example if you have a SATA Hard drive then you will need a PSU that has SATA power connectors. Most newer power supplies (PSU) have these. The box should list what connectors it has.

Upgrade for Bestec ATX-1956D (HP p/n: 0950-4106)

How about the LC Power LC350M Micro ATX - 380 Watt

or the

Logisys 350W Micro ATX

They should fit your form factor and output as much as 350W being relatively cheap, but neither gets 18 amps on 12V rail...
I think no power supply of that size has an output like that...think about a cheap but substancial chassis upgrade if you need that power...Have a look at directron for the PSUs.
