Unfortunately, optical drives are prone to failure since they are very precise devices and built too cheap to hold up.
You might try a cleaning disc, most of which come with a solution that attempts to clean the lens of the laser.

Sometimes these will help and are not expensive.
Most stores that sell computers will have them.

Sound like the optical eye in the drive has gone out. You're only option is to replace it.

Cd software disc will not load on to my computer. Isn't being recognized

If in case the cd was not recognized upon loading it to the computer you may do the following to check wether the cd is faulty or the cd drive.
  1. Verify that the correct disc (CD/DVD) is used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. For programs on DVD, verify that the drive containing the DVD is a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM drive. Most DVD drives will have DVD printed on the front of the drive. For programs on DVD, consider the following:
  • DVD drives can read both DVD's and CD's.
  • CD-ROM drives can read only CD's.
  1. If multiple disc drives (e.g., CD-ROM and CD-RW, or DVD and DVD-RW, or CD-ROM and DVD-RW, etc.) exist on the computer that can read the disc (refer to the items under Step 2), insert the CD or DVD into the other drive and try the program again.
  2. If you are attempting to install a program and the installation does not begin after inserting the CD/DVD into the proper drive, refer to the program's instructions for the installation procedure.
  3. Clean the CD/DVD in the following manner:
  1. Place a small amount of nonabrasive liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD/DVD.
  2. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD/DVD in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the CD/DVD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. (Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.)
  1. Try to use a different CD or DVD in the drive to see if that disc can be read.
  2. If possible, insert the problem CD or DVD into the DVD or CD drive of another computer to see if the issue persists.

Dvr cd drive won't play cds get message asking to insert a disc when one is already inserted

Your cd drive is damage, the laser head or the spindle is not functioning and is not reading the disc thus causing the message of no cd being insert to appear, however the cd-drive power is still working which the computer is able to still detect, but like I said earlier the spindle/laser head is malfuction. You will need to replace the entire cd rom drive. If you don't know how to replace it, an external cd/dvd drive will also do the job.

My cd drive shows empty even with disc inserted

If the disks you insert DO work on some other computer,
then it's time to spend $40 and buy a new CD/DVD-writer,
to replace the "dead" unit.

The "working properly" part is ONLY an indication that the hardware has been detected, and the correct software device-drivers have been loaded; it makes no guarantee that the unit will work.
Compare it to having a car -- it looks like a car, but if won't start, it still is a car, although it cannot be used as a car.

CD-ROM won't spin up

When the CD drive doesn't detect a disc or can't read a optical disc, it stops spinning. Perhaps you need a new CD drive or Lens needs cleaning.

About vindows vista

You buy a windows Vista installer disc from a website such as this one (Once the page loads navigate to Software>Operating Systems). After you buy the disc insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Now start your computer. During startup tell your motherboard to boot from the CD-ROM drive. This is done before the Windows (or whichever operating system you use) loading screen. It will give you a message such as, "Boot From - F2." Press the button associated with the message for the boot sequence (In the above example it would be F2). This is where you select your CD-ROM drive as the primary boot device, then press ENTER to confirm the decision. The motherboard might ask you to press a key on your keyboard to boot from the CD-ROM drive. In this instance press any key on the keyboard and the Windows Operating System Installer will launch.

Let us know if we can assist you further.

Relatd to slow working

These are two different problems...
1. most likely you have loaded too many programmes in the startup...uninstall the unwanted programmes...and clean the registry by registry cleaner.... clean your c drive or the drive in which OS is loaded by system tool...disc cleanup (in accessories)

2. increase your RAM if you still want to use all the programmes you have loaded.

3. Use a cd rom cleaner disc to see it the rom stars reading...or else you will have to replace the CD Rom

CD ROM doesn't detect discs at all?

My best quess wouldbe that the drive went out and you just don't realize or want to admit it. Switch it back to another system to test it, if it still dosn't work scrap it. Otherwise I would try booting to dos with an old 98se disk, see if it's your OS if it is, reinstall 2k.
