Grey screen

Please, try this test:

When you turn on the computer, press the F8 key multiple times to get to a menu (recovery, safe mode). If you get there, select Safe Mode. Once on Safe mode, restart the computer to see if it ever gets to normal boot.

My friends Acer aspire 5336 laptop keyboard is playing up. When she presses one key it types the letter about 4-6 times. I've never seen this problem before, any ideas?

Sounds like the keyboard has been hijacked by a virus or infection. Try booting in Safe Mode to see if the keyboard works ok.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

If the keyboard works ok in safe mode then turn it off and reboot the computer as if you are going into safe mode, but this time take the Safe Mode With Networking option (this will give you internet connectivity). Once it is booted up and running open your internet browser, then download and install MalwareBytes and run a Quick Scan.

Go to www.google.com and in the search box type: "Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download and install malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When the site opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the Gui Interface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be in red. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTED RESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your machine.

Why is my laptop is stuck in start up mode

Hi bungee221,

You can try to boot the system using Safe Mode and try to see it it will be able to boot so that you will be able to backup your file. In addition to that you disable other programs that might be causing the system not to boot up. Go to Safe Mode by reseting the computer then tapping F8. If your able to acces safe mode follow these instructions:
1. Go to Start then click on RUN.
2. Type MSCONFIG.
3. Go to Services Tab, click Hide Microsoft Services then click Disable All.
4. Reboot the computer and see it it will go to normal mode. It you will be able to boot to normal mode it only means that one of the installed software is preventing windows to load.
5. if still cant boot you neet to reformat the system. Take note that if you reformat the system all the files will be deleted so its better to back up the files first. You can use a Recovery Disk that came with the system or you do a Acer Disk Recovery.

Acer Dsik Recovery Steps:

1. Power on the Machine
2. At the white ACER BIOS screen, hold the Alt key and press the F10 key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery
3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click Restore to Factory Default Settings
4. Click OK to continue
5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore a fully functional factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
6. Once eRecovery has run, press OK to reboot unit.

If you think this helpful rate me and dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

My screen goes off when windows xp starts the boot process

Does the display come back at all?

Is it the same on an external monitor?

As soon as BIOS screen disappears press F8 multiple times until a text menu appears allowing you to to select SAFE MODE. Select SAFE MODE.

DO you get a display now?

Can you select 1024x768 resolution and get a display, if so, rebot and try a normal boot.

Windows won't load

Try booting to "Safe Mode" (tapping the "F8" key on boot), or however you can get to your Desktop, click start, right click "My Computer", select "Properties", then "Advanced" tab, then click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery", then uncheck "Automatically restart" under "System Failure", click "OK" then "OK" again and restart your PC.

That should allow you to run without the instant restarting on BSOD, so you can repair/remove Mcafee.

Hi from london, have new acer aspire 1 zg5 new keeps shutting down after boot can u hlp pls?

Try booting the system to Safe mode.

To boot to safe mode:
Restart the computer. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, keep tapping on F8 key on your keyboard. When the Windows Options menu appears select the "Safe mode" then press Enter.

Once you managed to boot to Safe mode, change the computer startup and recovery settings by right-clicking "My Computer" then select Properties. Select Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Uncheck the box for "Automatically restart" under System Failure.

Reboot again normally, see if it will reboot again by itself. If you managed to make the system boot normally, proceed to Events Viewer to find out what is the caused.

If the system failed to boot normally after doing the above, you might want to boot the system to "Last known good configuration"
