Try this:
1. check your usb port (if possible try another)
2. make sure the scanner has enough power (if not use stabilizer)
3. Try using windows scan instead of software scan. i.e scanner and camera wizard
4. if you are using windows vista or 7 try running the application as an administrator

this should work
of not contact a nearby technician

I would look at cleaning the printer glass where your documents are scanned first, if it doesnt resolve problem the printer might need a clean throughout and unless your adept and confident it should be done by someone who is.doesn't take much to upset the workings of these machines.

How do you scan?

Open the Applications folder on the hard disk on which MP Navigator is installed, then open the Canon Utilities folder and double-click the navicon.gif MP Navigator 3.0 icon. MP Navigator opens.
2. Point to Scan/Import and click 'Photos/Documents (Platen)'.
macnavscanfirst.gif
3. Place the document face-down on the platen glass, and select 'Document Type'.
How to place the document and Document Type depends on the document to be scanned.
navscandocwindow.gif
How to place the document
Allow 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen glass and the document.
Align a corner of the document with the corner at the arrow of the platen.
macnavscanselectdoctype.gif
  • When you select Color Photo or Black and White Photo, the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly if you do not leave 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen glass and the document.
  • When you select Color Photo or Black and White Photo, the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, select Document Size such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned.
  • When you select Magazine(Color), the Descreen function will be enabled and scanning takes longer than usual. To reset the Descreen function, disable Descreen in the Scan Settings dialog box.

4. Click 'Specify'... and set the preferences as required.
The Scan Settings Dialog Box opens. Specify the Document Size and Scanning Resolution.
macnavscanscanset.gif
  • When Document Size is Auto Detect or Auto Detect(Multiple Documents), the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, select Document Size, such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned.
5. Click 'Scan'.
Scanning will begin.
When the document has been scanned, the scanned image is displayed in the Thumbnail List area.

There is a Black thick strip coming along while scanning what might be the problem

Something is stuck on your scanner "glass". This is a small strip of glass about an inch wide that runs from one side of the scanner to the other. If you open the panel where the documents are fed in to be scanned you should be able to see the glass. Sometimes a small flashlight comes in handy. Once you located the strip you can clean it with a cloth that has a bit of glass cleaner sprayed on it in the area you are using. Most of the time a general cleaning will take care of the line. If after cleaning the line does not go away then look at the image of the scanned document and use the original as a guide by placing it the same way in the machine that you placed it originally. The area of the document where the line is being created will guide you to where the area of the scanner glass is creating the line. Concentrate your cleaning effort in that area.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

When I scan pages in the computer using the document feeder a black line appears on the scanned pages. what can I do?

Try cleaning the PMT (Photo Multiplier Tube) - the glass tube that picks up the image. If there is a foreign body or dirt on the tube you will see a black line vertically (in the scan direction) on the page.

Vertical white lines in scanned image

Did you try cleaning the little glass strip where the documents go in? Lift the button panel and wipe the glass with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs or lens paper if you have it. Mine does this sometimes when dust or white out or little bits of paper get stuck on the glass.
Good luck!

Black line when scanning or copying

If the line only appears when the scanner is used & not when printing directly from the computer, you are correct in assuming the problem lies in the scanner assy. There should be mirrors attached to the scanner assy which will gather dust and cause copy/scan problems. Remove the glass & clean the mirrors with a DRY cotton cloth. Do not use any cleaning solution on the mirrors as they are sometimes treated & can be ruined if they come in contact with a cleaning solution. Use the dry cloth to wipe off the lens while you have it apart. Also clean both sides of the copy glass while you have it off. Reinstall glass & test.Cleaning the optics solves the problem most of the time. Good Luck!!
