You didn't mentioned if it is vertically or horizontally 3.5 inchs black.
If horizontally 3.5 inchs black you have a faulty electrolytic capacitor on the vertical section.
You are now wondering why vertical section is affected,because you haven't enough vertical scanning that's why the 3.5 inchs fill only by black.
Send it to repair or look for a qualified technician to replaced the electrolytic capacitor on the vertical section.
