Cd drive wont open or run cds

Try re-seating the cables on the CD drive and where it connects to the motherboard.
Reboot the computer and go into the BIOS and check if the CD drive is detected. If the CD drive is not detected in the BIOS then the CD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Tip

DVD drive not detected.

1) Reinsert the IDE and power cables of ur dvd drive connected with motherboard.
2) See if it gets detected in BIOS.
3) If it is detected in bios, and not detected in windows explorer( ie My computer) do this. Right click anywhere in my computer and click properties or press windows key(bet ctrl & alt)+break. -Select the hardware tab -Click Device manager. -Right click CD/DVD ROM drives and click scan for hardware changes.
4) If it is still invisible, then the changes has occurred in registry. There are 2 filters(upper & lower) which has to be deleted in the registry.
5) There is software called doug knox(CD/DVD fix) it would fix this.
6) To do this process manually, Run->regedit->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->Current control set->class->{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}http://lh6.ggpht.com/_lH6HIoVNDJs/Sx3iQ7RdDpI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/a8sWV8GIyuM/s1600-h/Screen%20Snaper%20Image[18].png
7) When u double click the dvd drive and if u get incorrect function. Right click and select properties on dvd drive. Select the recording tab. Enable the check box "Enable CD recording". http://lh4.ggpht.com/_lH6HIoVNDJs/Sx5BFPBRiHI/AAAAAAAAA3o/H1yBWSpDdmw/s1600-h/Screen%20Snaper%20Image[3].png

Non functioning CD/DVD drive on Shuttle SN41G2 PC

Does Windows still detect the drive? If you were to go into My Computer or Computer (depending on the version of Windows) are you able to see the drive?
Place a DVD or CD (Software or Multimedia) that you have tested on a different system and then use Windows Explorer to browse the drive.
To launch Explorer right click on My Computer (Vista/Win 7: Computer) and then select explorer. Select the DVD drive and see if you are able to view the contents.
If Windows still detects the drive and you are unable to view the contents of a tested DVD or CD then it would most likely be the drive.

Computer shuts off randomly

i suspect that there could be driver issues on your system that made your computer to shutdown, if you stil changed your power supply, and cd drive, then there might be a problem with the cable that you are using or the slot from your motherboard. If you install the cd drive you should check first from bios if it can be detected. Is your drive an IDE or SATA?

My CD/DVD drive won't read CD's or DVD's that I put in. The drive is detected on My Computer.

It can still be a bad drive even if it is detected. Try installing another one.

Problem with dvd/cd ram does not detected cd

CD Recording software that comes with HP and Compaq computers is made to recognize only the original CD and DVD drives. If a new CD or DVD writable drive was added, use the software that came with the drive or purchase and use new CD writing software. If you are using Windows XP, you can use Windows XP itself to create CDs (not DVDs). CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows If the drive is missing in Windows, remove all connected USB, firewire, and parallel devices and perform the following steps to enable the drive in Windows: Step 1: Checking for CD/DVD drive in BIOS Make sure the drive appears in Setup. The drive has to be detected in the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) before Windows can see the drive. Check for detection as follows:
  1. Turn on the PC. When the first logo screen appears, press the F1 key repeatedly until the BIOS Setup screen appears (on some models this key press may be different, F2 or Del )
  2. Press the F5 key, and then press the Enter key to reset the BIOS to the defaults.
  3. Use the Left and Right Arrow keys to select Main .
  4. The hardware-identifying name should appear next to Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, or Primary Slave.

Well, I am not sure about Hp photosmart, But most printers, Like all hard drives, you must install a CD-Rom disk in order to do this, I see that your CD-DVD-Drive was not working also, It should've came with a disk to install it on probably floppy, or your old driver, Hope this helps.
