If your phone displays the 'Insert simcard' then your phone is currently locked to particular network. You need to unlock to use it with other network.
There can be many ways to Unlock your phone. As far as i know unlocking by codes is the simple and safe way. I will suggest the website Unlock-zone.com which is doing good service and they were recommended highly in the cell phone forums.
I used them to unlock my cell phone. contacted them and within 30 mins i had my unlock code and my phone was unlocked.

My cellphone can read my 3g sim card but I get no signal from SP.

I have to inform you that China sells alot of "unlocked" phones some of them are legit some are not.There are alot of conterfeit phones coming out of China you have to be careful. It's clear that the sim card is fine if you used it previously in another AT&T phone.

The problem is the phone itself, either A. it is not unlocked as it was advertised to be or B. the phone is bunk period....can you post the website you purchased this from ?

There is not much we can do from this site, AT&T was your best bet. Typically they will not deal with "unlocked" phones did you mention to them that you purchased it from China ?

sometimes it is as simple as cleaning the sim card and sim points on the phone with a pencil eraser. sometimes it is related to a simcard IC (usually placed close to the sim tray in the phone) so if u do not succeed cleaning the sim and sim points of the phone u need to change the simcard IC

It alway diplay No SIM Card inserted even when there SIM Card in it.


Solution, try putting a paper behind the sim card before placing it in the cellphone. The paper adds thickness to the sim card and makes it touch the connectors in the cellphone.
