Question about Maytag Washing Machines
To open the front panel there are 2 green clips between the top of the unit and the front panel. (you can use a flash light to find them easier). Push on the with a putty knife or small flat head
screw driver while lifting on the top. Once the top is open, you will find 2 5/16 screws that hold the front panel on at the top on the right and left hand sides. Once these are removed, you can tilt the front panel forward and remove it.
However, the most common source for this squeek is a bad brake. You would need a specialty tool to remove it. If you go down to your local appliance parts store, bring your model number (located on the back top of the console). Ask them for a brake, stator, spring for that model and a maytag spring compressor. To replace it, first pull the unit forward and lean the top backwards to about a 45 degree angle (or until it will stay leaning against the wall behind it). Now pull your belt off from the bottom. It will come off the pulleys fairly easily. Next remove the cap on the bottom of the large pulley. Underneath you will see a clip on the very bottom. Work it off with a small flat head screw driver. Now place another screw driver on the bottom of the haft in the middle and let the parts fall down on top of it so they will stay in the proper order. Make sure to use your small flat head to make sure all of the washers have come off. Now, install your brake tool. (the directions come with it) but basically, you remove the pin, loosen the nut, slide the tool over the shaft, re-install the clip and tighten the nut back down until the tub turns freely. Next remove the 6 black 5/16" screws that are on the brake. Once you remove those, loosen the nut once more on your brake tool. Once it is loose enough, remove the clip on your brake tool. Reach up and tilt your tub slightly towards the front. This will let your stator, brake and spring all come out. Remove the cap from the top of the spring you just took out. Add it to the new brake spring and stator and reverse the process. The squeek goes away. Still having troubles? Drop me a note back
