The unit has a control board on  the rear of this model and that is what controls not only the defrost time but the compressor operation... there is also a defrost thermost on this unit that when reaches temperature it is connected to coil it will allow power to go through and turn on heater... the third componet is the heater and you need to make sure it is good...

the next time you thaw unit out take a volt meter and ohm out your heater and make sure that it is not broke....

the control board part number should be a    wr50x10044

and the bi-metal/defrost thermostat               wr55x10339

a couple of sites to look for parts other than g.e are               should be able to type a model number and get a diagram and order parts      hope this helps out and please vote / solution...

Its a Double French doors pull out freezer on bottom, model number brother has plugged it back in after defrosting all the ice and we can't hear the fan, apparently not working yet? Is this...

On a regular fridge there is a timer located at the back of the fridge that activates the auto defrost on and off during a predetermined cycle. The timer provides power to an electrical heater (black cable) curled around the freezing elements, this action defrosts the cooler. This timer has an unusual rotating shaft on which a screw driver is used to rotate it and it is designed that rotation can only be in one direction. Look at the rear of your fridge and try to locate this timer, it is normaly mounted on the edge of a side panel near the coils.
Once you have located it , use a screw driver that fits the groove of the rotating shaft and rotate it in the allowed direction (as you can only turn it in one direction) the fan should the run, if not, slowly continue rotation 360 degrees and until it does . IT IS POSSIBLE THE TIMER IS DEFECTIVE...REPLACE IT WITH IDENTICAL TYPE AND MODEL. This should be the cure to your problem. Good luck.

Refrigerator part of coil freezing up, what would be the problem?

2) Some refrigerators contain timers that control the self-defrosting heaters. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find the timer, depending on the model of your refrigerator. In most cases, side-by-side refrigerators that have temperature control knobs at the top of the fridge compartment often have the defrost timer located near the thermostat behind the control knobs. It looks like a small, round object with one flat end that has four electrical prongs. It is also often located in the control panel, behind the fridge or behind the foot kick panel at the base of the appliance. Use a flathead screwdriver to advance the timer until you hear a click. This should start the defrost heater. If it doesn't, the timer probably needs to be replaced. Continue to turn it clockwise and a second click will be heard, which turns off the defrost heater. If the timer isn't clicking, simply pull it out and "plug in" a new timer.refrigerators that don't have timers have control panels that control the self-defrosting unit instead. The control panel can sometimes be tested using the controls on the water dispenser or by removing the rear of the front panel to access the controls. A simple press of the button will run several diagnostics that will test your defrost timer, thermostat and heater. The specific instructions vary depending on the model of your Kenmore refrigerator. Consult your owner's manual to run the diagnostics if you have a control panel in your refrigerator.

Freezer coil, inside freezer compartment continues to freeze to a solid block of ice. Apparently the auto defrost isn't working. I can manually shut it down, thaw it and restart. It works fine for...

Your defrost circuit is made up of a defrost heater, defrost thermostat and a defrost timer (generally, but will depend on make and model). They are relatively straight forward to troubleshoot and replace, and not that expensive.

Suggest you go to and plug in the model number of your frigerator and look up the parts you need to get an idea of how much they are. NOTE: Sears isn't the cheapest place to buy the parts, but they use the real part number for further research.

Refrigerator no cooling, ice forming on back of side-byside freezer

The refrig is freezing up. I suspect the defrost timer isnt working. The timer activates a heater in the coils which allows them to warm and be self defrosting. If the timer isnt working this wont happen and freezer becomes an iceball. Take the panel off inside the freezer side and you will see the coil froze up. Defrost these with a hairdryer then replace the defrost timer inside the refrigerator behind the light and place where you adjust temp. If that dosent fix it it could be the heater itself but the only way to know is try that first. Easy fix should be inexpensive

Defroster timer location

Good day,
Sorry, no timer. This machine is run by a motherboard which gets it's data from a series of thermistors.
The motherboard is located on the back rear of the machine behind a removable cover.
In the freezer, behind the rear panel, is a main heater located at the bottom of the evap coil.
As well there is a limiter thermostat located on the top of that coil. Either can go bad. To test you need an ohm meter and a decent knowledge of electrical.
2 thermistors are located in the same area. One helps decide when to defrost, and the other is used to control fan motor speed. (simplified).
If you feel comfortable digging that deep, you can start testing, and/or removing suspected parts and taking them to an appliance parts house for testing. The motherboard is very pricey.

Look here if you want to see a breakdown of the machine..
Copy model number first.

Refrigerator not very cold. It's a 2000 model and it just started not being very cold despite turning the thermostat down.

you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Cooling sometimes, freezer leaking water when it stops freezing

It is probably the defrost thermostat located on upper condenser coil to the left of the fan in the freezer compartment. If not, it could be the defrost timer located near the thermostat in the refrigerator under the plastic dome where the light is. If the defost thermostat or defrost timer is not cycling the defroster heater element on and off correctly... an ice dam forms clogging the drain tube which freezes and blocks water (from the the defroster) to draining down and into the evaporator pan located on top of the compressor in the rear of the unit near the floor.
