Question about KitchenAid Superba Architect KSCS25INSS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Our Kitchenaid kscs25fkss00 is staying cold on bottom of freezer and frig but not on top - ice stays frozen on bottom but melts on top. We tried replacing the fan but that didn't work. We have been told the likely culprit is the circuit board but that it is no longer available. Ideas?

Hi, when the compressor runs during the call for cooling, the evaporator (freezer section) fan must run, to force cold air in through the freezer-to-fridge section vent. And if you have a condensor fan that blows or sucks room air through the hot coils, that has to run also. If either one is not, there is your problem.

Or the freezer coils may be iced up inside, and there is so much ice (that has become an unwanted insulation) that not cold enough air is being picked up by the freezer fan. And/or that vent also got blocked with ice. When either of these happens, it still will be able to freeze in the freezer - but the low temp may only be say 20 degrees, and you might have 50-60 in the fridge section - when you want about 0 in freezer and about 35-37 in the fridge section.
The cause can be from a defrost timer not working, or the defrost thermostat strapped onto the freezer coils is shot (the electrical circuit within it should be closed, when the coils are frosted), or the defrost element itself is shot. You can test both of these with a voltmeter. If you have a newer digital fridge, you may have some more modern stuff, like a control board and a thermistor involved.

If it is the circuit board, you need to replace it as you already know......

Freezer stays cool but bottom stays warm.

I agree with your analysis, and recommend that you replace that fan between the two sections.

Our 14 year old KitchenAid Superba side by side refridgerator (Mondel KSRS22FGBT01) is not cooling the top half of the freezer section. Bottom half seems to be able to keep cold - but top half doesn't....

Do you see any ice build up on the back wall of the freezer compartment? You probably have one of the following problems: A failed defrost system, meaning the defrost timer and/or element has gone out and your evaporator coil is frozen over; you are low on freon and this too will cause your evap coil to freeze over until the freon drops so low all cooling stops; or there could be a clog in the capillary tube which is the very small diamiter copper tube that carries the condensed liquid freon to the evap coil. Unless you have gauges, a licence to buy freon and service valves (or a buddy with such) you are limited to what you can do. Here is my advice:1. unplug the frig and let it defrose over night, unplug the frig and empty the freezer to remove the back cover to look for ice, a frozen fan and if so get your hair dryer out and melt the ice so you can test the fan and the defrost element (you will need a volt/ohm meter to do the element check. You can do it.

We bought our frig exactly 6 years ago (to the date!) and suddenly the frig part is cool, but not cold, while the freezer section stay cold and ice is frozen.

Check your freezer section ! Is the coil frozen over ? If so it may have a burnt out defrost element or a bad defrost timer. When the freezer coil freezes over cold air is restricted to the refrigerator section.

Freezer not freezing

Check to see if the fan motor in the freezer is running. Most likely it is not circulating the cold air Also make sure the defrost drain line is clear and has drained out. A frozen sheet of ice will restrict airflow also

Bottom freezer not staying cold

One of two things. When you open the freezer drawer, do you hear a fan running? If not, that's the problem. The Evaporator fan. Its' job is to circulate cold air throughout the entire cabinet. Without it, things get toasty. If not the Evap Fan, it'll be the sealed system... meaning that it's developed a leak and freon is escaping (not harmful for you or your Family). If it's just under 5 years old, this will be a warranty repair. Over 5? Bad news... it'll cost ALOT to have it repaired.

Icemaker issue: cubes melting at the bottom causing water leak out the front

J, sounds like your dispensor flapper is not closing properly and you are drawing warm air up into the ice bucket. This model had an issue where the flapper pin holder was part of the housing and would break off. They have a kit now that fixes that problem. The only other thing it could be would be low freezer temps or it's staying in defrost too long. With out being there, I would start with the dispensor flapper. Check it out and post back..
