Question about Washing Machines
Problem occurs due to cool washes(i.e. 40c and under) not destroying bacteria from clothing/detergent which then breeds inside your machine, therefore creating a sometimes sulpherous or musty smell.
i would advise you to regularly do a hot wash(minimun 60c) with an old towel, soda crystals and washing machine bleach i.e. vanish, ace etc with an old towel in the drum to move the mixture around. if you keep up with this the smell will eventually go away.
you can buy limescale/detergent removal powders which will do the same job.
hope you find this useful.

After having the repairman out here numerous times, ie. 6, we finally found out thet if you adjust the drain hose a little at a time the smell goes away. it was explained to me to work like a "pea trap" in plumbing. make sure your drain hose has a slight/medium curve to it, don't let it go straight into the drain, it has to have some curve to it that way the smell from old water does not come back into the washer. i now have almost a "u" shape curve to my drain and haven't had the smell in 2 weeks!!! hope this helps.

I had the same musty smell problem with my front load Maytag and I sold it because of the problem. When I went to buy a new washer and dryer, the salesman told me we wouldn't have this problem with the Whirlpool because the drainage system was better. Well........I have the same problem. I run bleach through a hot cycle and I leave the door open in-between washes, but it doesn't help. Doesn't anyone have a solution for this annoying problem with front loaders? I'm ready to sell my 3 yr old Whirlpool if this can't be fixed and get a top loader. My clothes always smell fresh when I wash them at my Mom's house with a top loader.
