I have a strong musty smell in my LG front loader. I ran a cycle w/ white vinegar and left the door open for over a week while on vacation, thinking it would air out. It didn't. Any suggestions??

Yes, I have had a similar problem and haven't tried anything yet to resolve. Would be interested to knowing the solution to this also.

  • Anonymous Jul 21, 2008

I find the same problem with mine. I actually leave it open between washes to try to avoid this. I'd love to hear a better solution. We're moving now and I won't have the room to leave the door hanging open all the time.

i have a toploader maytag and it smells so bad and now my clothes smell like a sewer. i tried bleach and then baking soda no help. I am so discouraged since my first front loader got infested with mold!!!!

  • louann_hendr May 08, 2009

After every load my washing machine smells musty, the clothes seem fine after they come out of the dryer, but it stinks up my laundry room. If I open the lid and let it air out it goes away till the next load. Someone told me I could use vinegar but I dont know how much to use and w/ hot or cold.

  • Anonymous May 13, 2009

I actually looked this up because I'm tired of the smell every time I open the washer! I've tried running vinegar in hot water through a full wash, and also bleach, spraying with surface sanitizer, everything. I have a top loader too, and its only a few years old. It stinks! Literally.

Problem occurs due to cool washes(i.e. 40c and under) not destroying bacteria from clothing/detergent which then breeds inside your machine, therefore creating a sometimes sulpherous or musty smell.
i would advise you to regularly do a hot wash(minimun 60c) with an old towel, soda crystals and washing machine bleach i.e. vanish, ace etc with an old towel in the drum to move the mixture around. if you keep up with this the smell will eventually go away.
you can buy limescale/detergent removal powders which will do the same job.
hope you find this useful.

After having the repairman out here numerous times, ie. 6, we finally found out thet if you adjust the drain hose a little at a time the smell goes away. it was explained to me to work like a "pea trap" in plumbing. make sure your drain hose has a slight/medium curve to it, don't let it go straight into the drain, it has to have some curve to it that way the smell from old water does not come back into the washer. i now have almost a "u" shape curve to my drain and haven't had the smell in 2 weeks!!! hope this helps.

I had the same musty smell problem with my front load Maytag and I sold it because of the problem. When I went to buy a new washer and dryer, the salesman told me we wouldn't have this problem with the Whirlpool because the drainage system was better. Well........I have the same problem. I run bleach through a hot cycle and I leave the door open in-between washes, but it doesn't help. Doesn't anyone have a solution for this annoying problem with front loaders? I'm ready to sell my 3 yr old Whirlpool if this can't be fixed and get a top loader. My clothes always smell fresh when I wash them at my Mom's house with a top loader.

Front loading Samsung washing machine smells from mildew. I have tried to clean the gaskets to no avail. What should I do to correct this problem.

If you have a smelly front loading clothes washing machine, toss in a Finish Geltabs (the ones that are all liquid) and run the machine on a hot wash cycle, medium to heavy load (to get more water in the tub) with no clothes in the machine. You don't need to use much of a spin cycle so set it on low. The washing machine will come clean and even the moldy spots on the rubber gaskets will disappear. A second treatment may be needed if the smell is not completely gone. We tried everything from vineger to bleach to baking soda to borax to commercially available odor removers from Whirlpool and Tide. Nothing worked until I hit on this idea. It's cheap, easy and can be done anytime your machine needs a refreshing. I used the orange Geltabs but any fragrance would be fine. Keep the door on your washer open a bit when possible to air out to help preclude thiose nasty smells.

The waqshing machine smells inside

All front loader have this problem. Use concentrated lemon juice to clean the boot and then you will have to leave the door ajar just a bit every time you finish washing. Sorry but this the nature of having a front loader. Also using powdered soap products will also almost completly do away with this problem.

MACHINE WILL NOT DRAIN COMPLETELY THEREFORE IT SMELLS

No washing machine drains completely , there is always residual water in the hoses and heater sump

If the machine smells do a couple of hot washes with no clothes in but add a good dose of soda crystals dissolved in hot water.

Pour this mix into the drum before you start the wash

Try going back to old fashioned soap powders for a few washes , these contain some bleach and soda which kill of the fats left inside your machine by the normal 40 & 60 degree washes
