My computer and HP C6180 shut down overnight. Nothing else in the house was affected. My computer turned on normally, but I cannot get the printer to power up. I've unplugged it several times. Both are...

I am using an HP printer but a different model. Disconnect your printer connection to your PC first. You can then check "power brick" light if it on (normally green in color). The power brick is the small box between the wire connecting your printer on one end and the power surge. Check first if there is a light. If its off, you may want to unplug the connection on the printer and check if it will turn green with the wire connected to the wall. If it does turn green, it is a problem with your printer. If it doesnt, it may be a problem with your wire. If your printer wire does not come with this power brick, you can plug the printer directly to the wall bypassing the power surge and see if it will work. If that does not work, try to reseat your wirings and try again. If it still does not work, you need to contact your printer manufacturer for repair/replacement. Don't try opening your printer, it may void your warranty.

Printer is not working.

Your computer should pop up and tell you that you've installed a new piece of equipment anytime you plug something into the USB port, since most peripherials are plug and play. If not, then it doesn't recognize the printer. You may have a bad USB port. Try plugging the wire into a different USB port during the installation process.

With Brother, you have to use their installation CD and follow their instructions. You can't hook up the wires till *after* the CD has walked you through their installation process.

Try reinstalling using their CD and a new USB port to see if it will work now.

Printer will not turn on

You have already answered you own question. The ribbon wire holds about 30 wires in it. they all have to be seated in perfectly or it won't work for you. Take it to a computer store and see if they can re-seat it for you. Probably 30 bucks for labor to fix.

The phone wire from your wall jack gets connected to the jack marked "line" on your printer. If you are also are connecting a separate phone to the printer connect a phone wire from the jack marked "ext" to your phone. Just in case you need a manual here is where you can download one. Please rate if this helped. Thanks. Have a nice day.
