I am using dell vostro 1015. every thing seems to be working fine but yesterday when i ran DIAGNOSTIC from boot up, The DST failed showing a error 2000-0146. I'm using windows 7 and i have purchased my laptop almost 5 months ago which is still under warranty period, is there any way to fix this problem manually or what should i do now?? Please help

    @paul4265 i did as u told but it didnt work though my system is running very smoothly and i dont have any problem in boot up also, but the only problem is whenever i run DIAGNOSTIC TEST on boot up, it shows the same error saying DST failed, error code 2000-0146. As my laptop is still under warranty period the dell people are ready to replace my hard drive with a new one.. I would be immensely grateful to you if u provide any other solution to this problem. thanks

There could be a glitch in your bios, check and make sure that it has the drive listed as a SATA drive, and not an AHCI SATA. This has occured on other Dell computers, and some of them had this occur to them. The code actually means internal electronics failure in the hard drive process board, so if it Does say that it is a SATA drive, then your drive has bought the farm, or is on it's way there. If it can still boot, backup all your info before it is too late. Also, you can trythis....remove the battery, leave unplugged, hold power button for 15 secomds, release power button, reinstall battery, plug back in, and try to boot it up again. This can sometimes unfreeze a stuck bios and reset it back to factory settings, although it doesn't always work.

My dell vostro 1015 gets completely shut down without giving any prior warning..i have to restart it again and it shows that windows didnot shut down properly.it happens 3 to 4 times a day.plz help..


When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

It means "DST Log contains previous error(s)."
Dell Support says “If the diagnostic test reports one of the above errors, refer to Dell Troubleshooting Wizard: "Hard Drive Fails the Diagnostics" Wizard ID: 324398”

you might have jarred the memory loose. take it to a local technician to have them check it out.

DST result fails


I would say this is the memory. You said that you checked the memory, and it passed, but did you download a cd called 'memtest x86' ? This will definately make sure your RAM isn't cooked. You boot off of this disc and let it go for a couple hours, it will tell you if it finds errors. Also, if it's the harddrive, you can just replace the harddrive, and then hook it up via USB and retrieve your information.

Greetings AROD718,

This error message is telling you that your hard-drive is nearing OR has already failed.

I would contact a buddy or go somewhere local to get Data recovery ASAP or if that is not important to you start shopping for a new hard-drive.

Hard drives are not very expensive and are simple to install, if you need further assistance please reply back!

Hi,
The short DST test is generally the failure of the HDD,It would giive you code next to it , that would something like 1000-0146,or 1000-0141 etc. Do give that code and I would let you know the exact failure
