Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

My RCA HDTV is not working. When turned on, the green power light is lit on for 3-4 seconds, goes and comes on again for 6-7 seconds. Following this, it is gone. There is no picture or sound on the TV. The picture of my TV had convergence issue, which I fixed under directions of an expert. It worked for several months. After the recent problem was encountered, I re-did what I did for fixing the convergence issue (thinking that some soldering was not done properly), but the conditions were not changed. The model number is HD56W66.

I know a very little about electronics. However, I successfully fixed the convergence problem following the directions on how to do that. I first time opened the TV's back cover, correctly located the fuses and soldering that was deteriorated. What tools to use and what parts to buy; every thing was told by the Guru.

Can I get a complete step by step instruction to find and fix the ptoblem.

  • din_riaz Jan 06, 2011

It never turns red. After second liting green, the green power light turns off. The screen remains black during this whole time.

  • din_riaz Jan 07, 2011

It sounds you are taking me in right direction. Since I am ignorant in the field of electronics, I don't know how and where can I find the parts you told me. Previously somebody gave me so perfect directions that I was able to locate the specified parts without any problem and fix the blurred screen problem. Could you please further extend your help.

One more thing. This problem arose few months after I did desoldering and desoldering of the flyback. Is it possible I short circuited the board? I have just re-done all that soldering, but no improvement.

I don't see any capacitor with cracked, leaky or swollen caps. Could you please tell me more specifically with the specs and location of the possible faulty parts, and what to check on those parts.

  • din_riaz Jan 10, 2011

Sorry about that. Actually I was unable to find any bad capacitor. Could you please tell me specifically the location, part number and/or specs of the capacitors that I should check.

  • din_riaz Jan 13, 2011

I perhaps replied to you that I was unable to find the capacitors you are referring to. Could you please tell me specifically with part number, specs and location.

After the green light goes off, does it turn red and blink? Or does the LED at the front just go off?

Its a confirmed case of protection fault alright, but since the LED does not blink at all it is most likely to be the power supply or the deflection board. The first thing you should look for would be for faulty electrolytic caps(with swollen , cracked, leakycaps) which can cause this issue by overloading a particular voltage line , there by triggering the protect fault. Let me know how it goes.

The capacitors I am referring to are cylindrical objects with an X-mark at the top. The power supply is the one into which the power cord plugs into and the deflection board is the one with the flyback. These are the boards on which you should look for the faulty capacitors.

Ok. If its not the caps , we are gonna have to go for component level testing. Can you get me the chassis number of the tv(its under the model number of the tv on the label at the back) so that I can see if I have a service manual for this model?

I got that reply. THats why I said, please get me the chassis number of the tv so that I can see if I have a service manual for this model so that we can try more comprehensive component level troubleshooting. PLease click the view more comments link at the bottom to see further comments.

The blinking indicates that an excessive current is detected one of the output rails from the power source. When this happens the power source is put in protected mode first . If this doesn't work (since it starts blinking a second time) it's shut down for good. You must open the tv and test the power source: since it's a big current draw it means that a big consumer has failed so start checking with the high tensions - the ones that power the horizontal deflection module and the video finals. You must determine the location of the failure: in the power source (the rectifier diodes and the filtering capacitors - the most likely cause of problems in a tv this old) or in the other boards - the power transistor for the horizontal deflection is the first one you should look at.

This isn't a simple fix, you must first diagnose the problem and identify the failed parts. There is no step by step for that. If you don't have at least basic knowledge on how a tv components work and what is their role in there you simply cannot fix it yourself. Sorry, time for a repairman.

Replace CP150 and CP114 and CP120/ You can get the caps with instructions at the following link. They do have a minimum order amount of 10.00 so you may need to order an extra capacitor to total 10.00 but shipping is free. The parts are listed under the RCA parts category,

POWER WONT STAY ON

You have bad Capacitors cp150 2200uf 16v, cp111 330uf 35v cp114 220uf 35v this is common with these sets they are on your deflection board green with gold writing 2200uf etc. Look at capacitor cp150 if it has a bubble look on top it is bad so replace all 3 caps.
