Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have Scheu Universal 250-VC/250-S, SPC-250VC/SPC-250S, 250,000 BTU Construction Heater that lights great and puts out the heat, but the air flow running past the pilot light "bends" the flame away from the thermostat and it cools down and shut off the gas flow. What can I adjust to keep the pilot light from "bending" away from the thermostat?

The pilot orifice is blocked. Remove it and utilize a solvent like brake cleaner to remove the blocking material. Had the same problem. Works perfectly. Not enough volume of gas to keep the flame on the thermocouple.

I have a Scheu 250,000 BTU Propane heater, It will work for approx 15 minutes and then shut off

This heater is very similar to a heater available in the UK, the "Bullfinch 1400", also known as a "Bin heater" because of it's resemblance to the shape of a dust bin or trash can. This heater has a flame failure valve, also known as a safety valve or relay valve, but it may be a coincidence that the heater shuts off at exactly the same period of time every-time, but it would seem to indicate a fault with either the thermocouple or the flame failure valve, or possibly the over heat thermostat if there is one fitted to this heater. The Bullfinch 1400 for example does not have a overheat stat.

You should not have a problem using these units in the mountains. The only units that you may have problems using in the mountians (over 4,500 ft) is vent-free units that have the ODS pilots. I hope this helps...

I have had the same problem on a smaller unit (30,000 BTU). I remove the cover, take the thermocouple out of the burner area, and clean it until bright with either scotch brite or very fine emery cloth. The deposit on the outside prevents it from tranfering the heat to the hot end of the thermocouple and in turn to the sensor. I usuall do this once a year. The cleaning hasn't worked for me recently but the unit is 12 years old now and I will look for something else to fix.

Heater runs for 20 minutes then shuts off

These heaters have built in thermostats. Sometimes they are adjustable sometimes they are not, check to see if your is adjustable and see if this fixes your problem. Also check to see if there is any air restrictions possibly causing the heater to over heat.
