You need to check your network settings. A wireless button that is red or not lit up, shows that you are not connected to a wireless network. Be certain that a wireless network is available, and make sure that you have the HP wireless assistant software is enabled if that software is installed on your computer. If not, you can use the windows wireless networking utility to connect to a wireless network.
If HP wireless assistant is installed, you may have to open the windows wireless networking utility and disable wireless networking on the windows wireless utility in order for the HP wireless assistant software to be enabled.
Once you figure out which software is enable for wireless networking on your notebook, and without knowing the part number or p/n or your particular computer, I cannot tell you for certain. But I believe that the HP wireless assistant software is probably installed.
As long as your wireless button is activate, your HP wirless assistant icon should be on the task bar, on the bottom of the window, on the right side near the time. If you don't see if, click on the small arrow icon to show hidden icons. Right click on the HP wireless assistant icon (probably looks like an upward facing arrowhead or a small tower) click on 'open utility' and see if you see any available networks.
Lets work thru this part of the issue and try to narrow down where the connection problem is. Please let me know what you find after going thru the information above.

There is a key combo that makes it enable and disable. Check the user guide or look for the key that has that wireless symbol next to it. Also you need to check the device manager and see what it says about the device. IF there are any ! or ? OR X next to the item then there is a problem with it. To check the device manager hold down the windows key and press pause break, then release and select the device manager from the left side.
