Question about Sony Handycam DCR-SR40 Camcorder
Time Machine would only help you in the future. Is your Mac set up with Time Machine? If so you should be able to get the deleted files that way. Click the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then go back to before you deleted the files, they are probably still available.
If you don't have a Time Machine backup yet, then your best option would probably be Data Recovery for Mac

You have chance to get back some or all of those lost videos if you take care.
First things first: DO NOT take any more videos with the hard disk (on your camcorder) that you want to recover videos from. Take the disk out of your cam and put it in a safe place. Because if you take any more videos or save any data to your hard disk, you may quite possibly ruin your chances of video recovery.
Then Connect the disk to your computer as it should appear as a "Removable Drive" to your PC.
Next, if you are comfortable with using a PC then you can download a data recovery utility that will recover your videos with Wondershare Recovery Software (I once used this program bounded with some other software) from the following link:
Video Photo Recovery (if you are running Windows OS)
Mac Photo Video Recovery (if you are running Mac OS X)
Remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your camcoder(hard drive disk) until you can recover your videos safely!

You can recovery your video files from any format with the help of data recovery software. I would suggest try the Windows recovery software by Stellar. You can download free demo version of the software, it shows the preview of retrieved files.

I'm sorry that the videos are deleted from the camcorder and wants o be retrieved. You may need to be sent to a professional data recovery service company, like Sony Media Services or DriveSavers Data Recovery. For more information and pricing, visit the Sony Media Services Web site at http://www.sonymediaservices.com/, or the DriveSavers Data Recovery Web site at http://www.drivesavers.com.

Card Data Recovery is good video recovery software. It can recover video with various formats including FLV, MOV, MPEG, AVI, etc. from hard drive, digital camera, digital camcorder, memory card, USB, etc. It has two versions separately for Window and Mac users. You can see its official website here.
Video recovery for Windows (for Windows users)
Video recovery for Mac (for Mac users)

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
