It's possible your heat sink is full of dust.

The heatsink keeps the CPU from getting too hot and the fan cools the heatsink. These fans are temperature controlled by the BIOS firmware. When there are problems that need to be fixed(updated) Dell creates a new BIOS flash firmware which can be found on their website. Make sure your BIOS version is the latest. You can see which version you have while the laptop is booting, press F2 to get into that BIOS. My D600 ran hotter than I expected until I updated the BIOS firmware.

The charger is fine but the plug is very hot could it be that the 13 amp fuse is too high for this therefore causing it to get extremely hot to the point of melting

Hi Tino,
13 amp is definitely too high. The power rating of the AC adapter for a Dell Latitude D600 is only 3.34A. You will need to replace it.

don't worry most laptops nowadays run hot. your CPU will shut itself down long before damage occurs. try elevating your laptop to promote air circulation or place it on a cooling mat.

Be careful if you set it on your lap, some people have had minor burns from laptops setting on their laps for prolonged periods.

It is not the memory causing the issue. You either have a clogged fan and heat sink or a bad fan. This will solve most heat issues with the laptop.http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/faq.html

Install this software and put the fan on manual high. That should help a lot if the fan is still working.
