Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

Creative Zen:M 30gb. In recovery mode and HD only shows 50MB!

I am stuck in recovery mode (with firmware ver. 0.0.16). Although, I can fully access all the features in recovery mode ( except getting out ). My player does charge with usb or wall charger and is identified by my computer, but when I access it, the hard drive only has 50mb of space.
Even after I format it. What's that about? Is the hard drive defective?
I also cannot seem to update the player. the recovery tool identifies the player and downloads the software, but the installer program say's the player is not connected. Is my player salvagable?

By the way, when I turn on or reboot my player, a mesage flashes on top of the "ZEN" screen : "Firmware Problem" with this symbol " ! " in a triangle.

I also have another Zen:M with backlight issues. I think it's off , but how do I change this if I can't see the screen?. Is the backlight buned out?

any help you guy can give would be most appreciated! THANX!

Everybody saying they have the same problem over and over isn't helping at all. Instead of complaining, how about people give actual solutions instead of "oooooomg it wont work"

I have a creative zen m vision which is not working if I try to reload firmware I get a message harddidk problem - how do I proceed

1 HD damage could be done when you drop the Zen and you hear noises inside, some times the display just shows the Creative logo and no more.
2 the display just show the Creative logo, no noises inside, you can tray to put in Recovery mode as mentioned in the other solution and then erase firmware then reload firmware, this firmware can be downloaded form creative page,
Before you go to all that trouble though try these steps:

1. Connect the device to the wall charger.
2. Hold the power switch to ON.
3. Put a paper clip into the reset hole.
4. Continue holding the power switch on until the Creative logo appears.
5. Select Format All from the Recovery Mode menu. (Note: THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA FROM YOUR DEVICE! - but it's better than buying a new device)
6. When the reformatting is done, select Reboot from the Recovery Mode menu.

Stuck in recovery mode

Sounds like the actual firmware is corrupted. You might try loading the firmware on the Recovery Mode by using the firmware upgrade available at Creative's website.

Hope this helps

Stuck in recovery mode--would love to avoid buying a new mp3

I had the same problem as your and it stopped working yesterday. After search for helps and now it is working again after I reloaded the firmware. But unfortunately everything is gone. You have to reload your musics again. You can try this out: 1) go to creative labs website to download the "Recovery Tool". 2) at Recovery Mode of your zen there are options: Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware, and Reboot. Try out Clean Up first if it still not working then try to Format All. After that try the Reload Firmware. After you done the Reload Firmware. 3) Shut down your Zen and try to connect it to your computer. Now your Zen will automaticlly power On and computer will recognize it as a drive. 4) Open the Recovery Tool you have downloaded at creative labs website. This tool will detect your Zen and follow it's instructions: It works with my windows Vista. Well, it works for me, I think it will work for your too. Good Luck!
May God bless.

Recovery mode

to reset this player -- take out the battery and put back again.
In the recovery mode do the following: format the HD, clean the firmware. If those two go smoothly, go to and download the firmware, connect player to PC(still in recovery mode) and run the downloaded firmware.

Have you tried to load the firmware? First you'll need to download the firmware to your PC from Creative's website: Click here. After you've downloaded it, connect your Zen via USB to your PC and open the firmware icon, then click "Upgrade."

Creative Zen Touch firmware problem

This means both systems contain a bug, or cookie. If the firmware you accessed isn't applying itself to the device, this means the system itself has been corrupted. Double check with your system configuration properties on each device, and tell me whats going on from there.

Don't panic!

Cannot reload firmware

I had the Exact same problem and no one had a good solution, i only found one that finally worked after spending 4 freakin hours tryin to fix it. anyway here is the solution.

you need to use a computer that has Windows XP, then if the computer is running any version of Windows media player other than 10, roll back or upgrade to Media player 10. restart the computer.

Now, you need to download and run honestly i have no idea what it does. my guess is it reinstalles the USB ports but thats only a guess. but i was so frusterated by the time i found this solution that i was willing to try anything. so download this file, unpack it and run it. then it will ask you to restart. when your computer is restarted run the new firmware file ( i used and it works.

Why? i have no idea, but it i was pumped. the origional site i got this solution from is
