Could be the capacitor but also could be the magnetron which is a common problem with heating and one of the main sources of heating.... everything will work with a bad magnetron also it just will not heat... common problem with these... to test the capacitor you will need a meter that test microfarads or mfd good luck to you ....

if out of warranty you can try a simple "fix" . some microwaves are made with a simple fuse on the inside of casing- should be able to remove cover with 4-6 screws and then locate fuse- DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE! If in doubt replace the whole thing.

PS- if dusty inside ,use canned air(for computers or cameras)

I would think the main fuse may have gotten hot due to a bad fuse holder. If the fuse holder gets old and doesn't grab the fuse tightly it is an opposition to current flow, which is a resistance, and any resistance will produce heat, heat will make a fuse melt in its end and go bad. So, either that or something else just shorted out and blew the fuse inside. Need to call a technician. But the fact it finished its cycle then was dead when you went back makes me think the overheated fuse thing.

Hi there, everything seems to be working fine -- lights turn on, fan works, buttons all work, clock working, timer working, etc. -- but the microwave won't heat anything. any recs?

Generally, there are one of three failures.
Blown fuse in the Magnetron circuit.

The main capacitor failed (Required to power the magnetron)
The Magnetron itself has failed.
My local appliance repair guy helped figure out my last microwave failures. Once was the fuse the other was the capacitor.
The fuse was a couple bucks, the capacitor was $25 or so.
Generally, if you are not familiar with repairing a microwave, it is best to take it to a repair shop to be evaluated/repaired as it is real easy to get shocked working on one.

MY MICROWAVE WONT START BUTTONS WORK BUT WONT

the problem with microwaves is there like light bulds,,, fine for years then the just pop off, whatever it is there is very little you yourself can do with it bar check the plug fuse,, if thats ok dont even think of opening it up to have a look inside, you are very likley to just kill yourself
inside that microwave is a big capacitor that holds 1000, of volts and they can and do kill if you tuch the wrong bits of them,
have you ever seen a stun gun work? well that capacitor is its very big brother, only it wont just stun, it will kill you out right...is it worth the risk??? no! so drop it in the shop for repair or better still bump it and get a new one,, and up grade it as well,

Microwave will not heat

Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.
Q - My microwave is running and sounds like it is working but will not heat up anything.
A - Many thing can do this but, common things are....loose high voltage wire.....poor solder joint on board.....magnetron.....power relay.....
Q - The microwave display counts down and the inside light is on,  but nothing is heating and the fan is not running.
A - This most commonly is a bad door switch, other possible problems are a faulty relay or solder joint on the power module, but a bad door switch is most common.
Q - The fan in my microwave oven is not running will this hurt my microwave?
A - YES, the fan cools the magnetron and electronics, take the microwave in for service, most fans are not too expensive to replace.
Q - My microwave blows the fuse inside itself as soon as I push the start button.
A - Usually a shorted high voltage capacitor...see components section.
