Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Whirlpool extra large capacity washer. Does not agitate or spin. I hear the motor running trying to spin/agitate. I checked the motor coupling as I had to replace that a couple years ago and figured it had broken again, but it is intact. I am wondering if it could be the clutch assembly?? The water pumps out fine, so I am thinking the motor is fine. Suggestions? Thanks for your help!

I would replace the clutch and the bakes on the machine. It could be that the bakes did not release and then the clutch is going to burn up, and in that case the brakes are bad anyways so replace both of them.

Whiripool washer drains water, agitate OK but does not spin. What is the possible cause of the problem? Thanks!

are you sure it agitates or it sounds like it,you could have a broken motor coupling and i would check this first anyway, also check to see if any oil is around the coupling area a little ways back on the trans.if you do find oil on your hand you have a bad trans.just rub your hand over the bottom of the trans. right behind the motor and coupling.watch video

hope this helps, also when you set it to spin if you hear the motor running and hear like a grinding noise this is the coupling.

My whirlpool top loader extra large washing macine

Hi,

Many late model washing machines use a direct-drive system to agitate and spin. They don't use belts or pressure wheels to transfer power and motion from the motor to the transmission. The motor is coupled directly to the transmission. If the motor is running and there is no agitation or spinning of the tub, the culprit is usually a plastic coupling between the motor and transmission or the transmission itself.

How do I repair my Whirlpool Ultimate Care 2 LSQ9549L Top Loader Washer?

check the motor coupling,if the coupling is broken you'll hear the motor run but the agitiator won't move and no spin, the coupling connects the motor to the transmission.watch this video

Washer no longer spins.

with the washer set for spin and turned on...raise and lower the lid.
If it spins replace the timer.
If it does not spin...replace the direct drive coupling on the motor.

Washer not spinning/agitat

This problem is usually attributed to a broken motor coupling. The following link provides step-by-step instructions on how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The motor coupling is a small 3-piece component that is installed behind the drive motor and couples it to the transmission. It is common for these small couplers to break as they wear out. The key symptom in determining the cause is the fact the washer will not agitate, but still drains. The reason is because your drain pump is mounted on the front of the drive motor and will still run as long as the drive motor is running. The part number is provided in the link I gave you. A replacement coupler can be purchased at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, pcappliancerepair.com or repairclinic.com. All these sites offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop all of them for the best price. Make sure you "Search by Part Number" when looking up the part. This shouldn't cost more than $20. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common item they should have in their inventory.

If you have questions along the way, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Whirlpool Washer stopped agitating and spinning

the most common problem after a large load is the motor coupling has broke. it is what connects the motor to the transmission. it is not hard to replace if you can get the cabinet off the unit. you have to take the control panel loose and "hinge" it back to get access to the clips that hold the cabinet on to the frame. once you remove the cabinet, then take off the pump clips, the motor clips and then the motor. that will allow you to get to the coupling and replace with a new one. sounds easy but its not for a first timer. good luck and hope you can find this of some help.

if you hear the motor running while it is supposed to be agitating or spinning then it is most likely the direct drive coupling between the motor and transmission.43f18ab.jpg9bd1c44.jpg if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.  Mike

Spin and agitator not working

VERY POSSIBLY THE MOTOR/GEARBOX COUPLING HAS BROKEN. NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. SWITCH WASHER OFF THEN TILT WASHER 60 DEGREES BACKWARDS AND CHECK COUPLING. THERE IS A KIT WHICH CAN BE BOUGHT. DEFINATELY A D.I.Y. REPAIR.
