Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I got a reddy heater R50A, a hand me down from my Dad. I don't have a manual. I plug it in and the fan starts but it doesn't ignite. I filled it with new fuel before I started.

Here is a service manual for the heater.

http://www.desaparts.com/service_manuals.html

You first need to check for spark on the unit. If you have spark then make sure you have air pup pressure coming from the air pump / rotor on the back of the motor.

If you have other questions we can try to help.

Thank you.

On my R50A Reddy heater, the long protrusion is the plug for the air pump...

The most critical factor in getting your kerosene torpedo heater to run is the air pressure that the pump puts out. This air pressure is what pulls the fuel out of the bottom of the heater. It is very important that this is set correctly.

You will need a low pressure gauge (0-15 PSI) and a screw driver to make this adjustment.

On the back of your heater there will be a short and a long protrusion. Pull the plug out of the short one and insert the pressure gauge. The longer one is the adjuster screw. This is a very simple device that has a ball a spring and a set screw. Turn in on this screw just places more tension on the ball to allow less air to escape and raise the pressure inside the heater.

If you cannot get a high enough pressure then there is a leak or the pump is worn too much. To check for a leak use soapy water and check all the parts. The black plastic back can crack or the cork of the pump gasket can leak. Sometimes the rotor and vanes will go bad but not likely.

So, insert the pressure gauge in the short port, start the motor and check reading, you will only have a short time to do this if your heater is not firing. Turn the longer screw in or clockwise to raise the pressure and out CCW to decrease the pressure. Adjust to factory specs. And you will be getting warmed up.

Reddi heater 155 owners manual?

If this has a hot surface igniter, can you see it glowing? If not the igniter could be bad or the control
board for the igniter is baed.

If you are able, remover the igniter and hook it up to a 110 outlet, if it glows the problem is in the board.

If it has a board, follow the incoming power to line 1
and line 2. You will either have to splice the two leads
from the igniter into L1 and L2 or get a special spade
connector that can hold two leads on each terminal.

Plug unit in, glow coil should glow and unit should run
thats assuming you have that style of unit. Do not
attempt to do this unless you can safely perform this.

If you know of an electrician he can do this.

Trys to start. Motor turns slowly (revolution in 2-3 seconds).

Either:
  1. the reset (safety control) is bad
  2. the photocell is defective
  3. both of the above
To test the photocell http://reddyparts.com/photocell_test_sp.htm
