Question about Toshiba 32A50 32" TV

1 Answer

Toshiba 32A50 The horizontal scan lines seem to roll off the top of the screen and fold back down like the guns don't know where the top of the tube is anymore, just started about two months ago. Any help, suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks... Robert

There are 2 or 3 filter capacitors found near the vertical IC on the printed circuit board. One of them is likely defective. It would be a relatively inexpensive repair at a repair shop. The filters cost $1 each at most.

How do i repair my toshiba 32" model 32DF45. it shows a white line across the screen

In this case I think the vertical o/p IC is a AN5521?

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical.

Flatline!

the vertical drive ic that drives the yoke for vertical sweep has blown.
sometimes it is solder problems like sharp and toshiba had.
the part is 10$ the pc board will label it ,the yoke is the coil setup on the picture tube.if you follow the wiring half goes to the horizontal drive, and the others to the vertical section.the chip drives the coil directly.there are VERY high voltages in there ,even turned off. the pix tube cap on top is 30000v. like a stun gun.the horizontal drive 2000 volts and the main power supply 165 volts dc high current.you need a special setup to discharge the picture tube.

Mitsubishi TV had horizontal lines across the screen and rolls up

Answer
ONE: Yes, the speaker mounted close/near to the set can be a cause of mischief; please move it further away and see if that helps clear up the problem. But, you must keep it away for several days before you will know for sure because it takes some time to degauss all the internal parts that may have become corrupted by the magnets in the speaker.

TWO: Yes, any set can be repaired the question is cost and wisdom. Old sets are sometimes not worthy of the repair simply because of the likelyhood that another failure will follow soon after. A big screen always invokes a repair charge of $200 and up. After a few of these you will wish you had put all the money into a new set!

THREE: The lines are most likely a problem in the vertical blanking circuits of the set. These are horizontal retrace lines that are supposed to be blanked out during vertical retrace of the raster. Think of it as a paintbrush that scans across the screen painting thin lines and when you get to the bottom of the screen it goes quickly back to the top, but during that time the horizontal, which is many times faster, has made several sweeps; so it must be blanked out during the retrace. The repair involves finding the guilty parts and replacing them. Usually this repair runs over the $200 somewhat.

FOUR: Prior to calling in a service tech try a hard reset to see if that will recover any of the circuit degradations. Merely unplug the power cord and leave unplugged for 4 hours or more. It may help. Or, it may not help; but worth a try since is won't cost you anything.

If the set is over 5 or 6 years of age it probably is not a condidate for any expensive repair. On the other hand, it is a Toshiba - and they make a fine set.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further thoughts.

The picture on your TV is created by an electron gun firing at the phosphor coating on the screen. The position of the guns beam is controlled by magnetic coils, which are driven by scan circuitry.

Normally, the gun scans left to right, top to bottom to create each single frame of the moving image.

From what you are saying, it sounds like there is a fault in the vertical control system somewhere - basically the gun is going left to right but not up and down, resulting in your picture being squashing down to one row high!

It is unlikely to be a fault with the magnetic coils. My guess would be a faulty resistor that is breaking down (and changing its value) as it gets hot.

It should be a relatively easy to fix, but given the age/value of the TV it might be worth considering a replacement.
