Question about Intermatic EI210W Electronic Auto Shutoff Timers

Hi there, i have a timer that has three wires plus ground, but my fan switch in place just has two (hot) wires since i guess main power goes to fan first and my switch line is a just hot loop interruped by a switch. Can i make this work, or is this Intermatic EI210w the wrong timer for this application. Thank very much

It looks like the timer needs a black hot wire + a white neutral wire to operate.
If there is no neutral wire in the timer box, I think the timer won't work, you need a different type of timer.

4-prong to 3-prong Power Cord Conversion.


On a 4-prong power cord you have 2 hot wires, one neutral wire, and one ground wire. On a three prong cord, you have 2 hot wires and one neutral/ground wire. The difference is the on four prong the neutral wire goes to electrical neutral bus in the breaker panel and the ground wire goes to the ground bus in the breaker panel. Since the neutral and ground buses, although separate, both go to physical ground, on a three-wire setup, you are just putting the neutral and ground wire together, Most dryers actually have a place at the pigtail connection to do just that.

I am hooking up a leviton 1755 3 rocker switch that controls a light, fan, heater all in one ceiling unit. The old switch had the white wire in the top switch, one black in the middle and the other black...


1) Look at screw color.
New device has brass screws on one side, and 1 silver screw for each switch located on other side of device.
Hot wire goes to brass screw.
Wire to fan goes to one silver screw
Wire to light goes to another silver screw.
Wire to heater goes to another silver screw.

If you do not have a wire for each individual Load, then you will have to add wiring.

2) Electricians don't guess, they test.
Separate wires for testing.
Turn power ON.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire.
Hot wire connects to brass-colored screw.
If any wires on old switch was connected to same Hot wire, then also connect that wire to brass-colored screws.

Hot wire is identified.
Test Hot wire to each other wire in box, except bare ground.
Tester lights up on Neutral wire. Neutral wire will NOT connect to this switching device.
Next, connect one of the remaining wires to a silver screw.
Turn power ON.
Flip switch to see what Load that wire controls.
By process of elimination, add wires to each silver screw and test each by flipping switch.
Breaker will trip if you connect Neutral to silver screw.

I'm trying to install this Woods 59008 automatic fan timer in the bathroom. My old on/off switch only has three wires....and I that a light switch next to that. The woods 59008 has a red, black, white...

These in-wall timers have extra wire to operate the electronics located inside timer.
You said your old switch has 3 wires.
The new timer can only replace on-off switch that has 2 brass screws and a green screw.
If old switch has 2 brass screws and a dark screw, that is a 3-way switch.
Typically a 3-way switch is found at both ends of hallway.
The Woods 95008 countdown timer is not made to replace 3-way:

Here's what to do:
1) Switch has 2 wires (plus bare ground wire). Take switch wires and connect them to timer-black-wire and timer-red-wire. Choose either one for now.
2) In back of electric box are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect timer-white to these wires. This wire will power timer electronics.
3) If electric box does not have white wires described above, then connect timer-white to bare ground, along with timer-green wire.
4) Turn on electricity, and push override button located below the OFF button. If lights come on, timer is wired correctly. If lights do not come on, then reverse timer-red and timer-black wires.

Your switch has two black wires.
One of these wires goes to Load (light fan motor)
The other wire is hot. And this wire probably connects back to other switches in box making it easy to identify.

Timer-black wire goes to hot wire.
Timer-red wire goes to Load wire.

Timer green wire goes to bare ground wire.

Timer white wire runs the clock located inside timer. So timer clock is just like alarm clock, and needs its own power.
In back of 4-gang box are white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut.
These are neutral wires.
Timer-white wire connects to neutrals, and this completes clock circuit.

Installing a 7 day digital wall timer


Swylite LST100 timer has 4 wires. Red, Blue, Black, White
Timer has more wires than wall switch because timer has electric clock inside. And with + series Swylite timer, it also has led bulb that needs power.

Timer can replace ordinary on-off switch
-On-off switch has 2 screws, so 2 wires (plus ground wire) connect to on-off switch
-Three of the four timer wires are used when replacing on-off switch
-Red wire is not used, it is capped off

Timer can replace 3-way switch
-Three way switch has 3 screws, so 3 wires (plus ground wire) connect to 3-way switch
-One of the screws on 3-way switch is colored dark (it is crucial to identify the wire that comes off dark screw so timer can be wired correctly)

Lets replace on-off switch see diagram
Timer black goes to Hot wire
Timer blue goes to Load (light, fan, motor)
Timer white goes to Neutral
Timer red is capped off.

How to check which wire is Hot, Neutral and Load
Switch you are replacing has 2 wires > one is Hot, the other goes to Load
Remove these two wires. Separate wires so you can test. Turn on power. Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power. Test each wire to bare copper wire.
When tester lights up >> that is Hot wire >> please connect this wire to Timer black wire
The other wire goes to Load >> please connect this wire to Timer blue wire.
Now test for Neutral. Test Hot wire to other wires inside box. Neutral should be white. When tester lights up, that is Neutral. Please connect Timer white wire to neutral. IF YOU DO NOT have a neutral, you can connect Timer white to bare ground wire until you have time to drop a Neutral into the box.

Replace a 3-way switch see diagram
Three-way switch has 3 wires.
Identify which wire connects to Dark screw on switch >> and then please connect this wire to Timer Black wire.
Timer white wire connects to Neutral
Timer blue and red wires connect to other two wires that came off switch ... they connect to either one.

Review:
Black goes to Hot wire from breaker box
Red wire goes to Load (light, fan, motor)
White wire goes to Neutral
Green to bare copper ground wire

Orientation:
Your original switch had 2 wires plus bare ground.
One of these wires is Hot, the other goes to Load.
You said original wires are Red and Black

How do you find Hot wire?
-Your original switch had 2 wires.
-Remove timer from box.
-Pull original 2 wires out where you can test them
-Turn on power
-Use regular tester
-Tape tester leads to wood sticks so your hands stay away from voltage
-Power is on
-Test each original wire to bare ground wire
-When tester lights up, that is Hot wire ... this wire connects to Black wire on timer
- The other wire goes to Load so it connects to Red wire on timer

How to test for Neutral wire
Test Hot wire to your white wires - No need to untwist them.
When tester lights up, that is Neutral
White wire from timer connects to Neutral.
Green goes to ground wire.

How to reset timer
I'm not sure which timer you have. Probably GE 15086. Reset is small round button below HOUR button. Use paper clip and push-in reset until timer flashes 12 o'clock.

One caveat of most In-Wall electronic switches/timers is that the device _must_ be installed at the switch box that has the power, in your case switch #1. In order to install it at switch #2, in your case, you need an extra wire between the switches (to carry the HOT wire), and unfortunately, the bare ground(ing) wire is not permitted to be used to carry current per National Electric Code (NEC).

In your case the wiring for the ST01 is as follows:

Switch box #1: Connect the incoming White wire to the White wire in the 3-wire cable that goes to switch box #2. Connect the incoming (Black) HOT wire to the Black wire on the switch/timer. Connect the Red wire in the 3-wire cable to the Red wire on the switch/timer. Connect the Black wire in the 3-wire cable to the blue wire on the switch/timer. Connect the green wire on the switch/timer to the 2 bare ground(ing) wires. If you have a metal box this connection should also have a pigtail that connects to the box with a green ground screw.

Switch box #2: Remove all of the existing wires from the 3-way switch. The three-way switch will have 2 screws the same color (usually black) and 1 screw (usually brass). For this scenario, one of the black screws will _not_ be used.

Connect the Black wire in the 3-wire cable coming from switch #1, the Black wire going to the lights, and a short Black pigtail together under one wirenut. The pigtail is then connected to the brass screw on the 3-way switch. The Red wire in the 3-wire cable coming from switch #1 is connected to one of the 2 black screws on the 3-way switch (pick one).

In effect you are installing a single switch at switch box #2. In fact, you can use a regular single pole switch if you want too.

To finish, connect the White wire in the 3-wire cable coming from switch #1 to the White wire going to the lights.

Grounding is the same as switch #1 except you'll need a pigtail to connect to the green screw on the 3-way switch.

That's it. You may want to check the battery compartment in the switch/timer, as sometimes they put in a pullout plastic tab to keep it from being energized until needed.

Now, the E1210 is a different animal, and can only be used to replace a single pole switch. You could use it by basically passing the power through to switch box #2 from switch box #1 and then cover switch box #1 with a blank plate. The ST01 could be used that way too, in which case the black on the device connects to the hot, the blue to the lights, and the red on the device is not used, nor will the Red wire in the 3-wire cable between the switch boxes be used.

I lost my Leviton 6230M 30 mins timer installation sheet.


Switch has 2 black wires. One black is hot wire. One black is wire going to fan. Turn off power. Remove wires from switch and separate. Turn power back on. Using ordinary tester, test each black wire to bare copper ground wire. Only one of the black wires will test hot. The other black wire goes to fan.
Timer black wire connects to black hot
Timer blue wire connects to black wire going to fan
Timer white wire connects to white neutral (in absence of white neutral, connect Timer white wire to bare ground)
Timer green connects to bare ground wire

The black and white in the fan box are the main power and neutral for normal (low speed) of the fan. The two reds are the signal wires. It is basically a switch loop. You will actually need a total of 4 conductors (plus a ground) in order to run the high and low speed of the fan. The four conductors consist of 1) power from one switch to power up the fan, 2) neutral, 3) signal going to second switch, 4) signal going back to fan from second switch in order to run high speed. Without four conductors you can still run the high speed only by tying the two red wires in the fan together. This would be like always having the second swith in the on position. Hope this helps.
