GE40M06AAG lower element leaking at the gasket. Will any 240V, 4500W replacement element work, or is there one recommended?

taking it that you are talking about a hot water system (models mean nothing with out make and type of equipment) take the old element to a plumbers supply shop( hardware shops will not have the elements) and they will have a suitable replacement
elements can be straight loops or be curved so that the follow the sides of the tank
however with electric hot water systems , the leak is not always at the gasket but at the fitting behind the gasket which has corroded internally from electrolysis for the element
recommend that as there is power involved that you get in an accredited plumber to check the system first because if the tank is leaking then a new gasket and element is a waste of cash

It is not a refridgerator, it's a hot water heater!

The element is right behind that panel, sounds like that is whats leaking. The elements just screw in or have a plate that compresses againt the element and gasket. Either way sound like a simple fix be carefull those wires are 240 volts most of the time inless its a small water heater.
Lowes has the elements just shut off the power and drain the heater before you start. If its an older heater it will be rusted any may not come out, just be ready to a buy new heater if you cant remove the element and damage the heater due to all the rust. Good luck

I have no hot water in my home i can not locate the reset button

The reset button is located on the top thermostat, on the heater you will see a acess panel with screws in it to remove the thermostat and element is behind this panel. Once removed the top thermostat should have a red button to press to reset heater.
If it resets then wait for a little time for hot water. If this doesn't work then it could be the elements are in need of changing.

No hot water on electric but burning hot on lp gas, what can my problem be.

Need to confirm hydro to water heater, all switches breakers etc on, and check to make sure switch at back of water heater at connection box on as well. If power to back of water heater, then check for reset in center of ECO on back behind cover. If power going to element ( behind cover as well) then replace element. Be careful when removing cover on back. Shut breaker off at main panel until you can get cover off and ready to test voltage.

Replaced bottom element and both thermosats. the reset button tripped what would cause this to happen

Reset trips when upper thermostat senses high heat event over 150 degrees F.

High heat can be caused by:

1) Element shorted to ground through center of element. Thermostats turn off one leg of 240V circuit. Elements always have 120V available. If element is shorted to ground, it might not trip breaker, and continues to heat using one leg of 240 with circuit completed to ground wire.
Test elements:

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-EH40-hot-water-heater-timer.html#120-240

2) Insulation and cover not put back over thermostat. Thermostat exposed to cool air, misreads temperature causing element to continue heating.

3) Thermostat sticking in ON position. I usually replace both thermostats at same time to save another trip.

4) Shorted wire or loose wire at or near upper thermostat. Check that screws are very tight against copper wire.

5) One suspect can be eliminated is 240Volt power to heater.
Your heater circuit is good.

I have a rheem water heater model # 72- 40- 1 not getting enough hot water .it only has 1 element how can i put in another element and wire it correctly? please help

First, let me say that no Rheem electric water heater that I am aware of has only 1 element.
You may have to search - but there should be one about 8 inches from the top and another behind a panel about 10 inches above the bottom. Please search again.
It is NOT possible to add an element to a "used" water heater. The inner and outer liners must both be sealed and that is done at the factory.

Water not getting hot / Kenmore Economizer 6 / Electric

Did you check to make sure that the breaker is good on the unit? Check to make sure you are getting voltage. If not, check to make sure that the thermostat located in behind the panel on the heater is getting voltage and also sending voltage to the elements. If the elements are getting voltage but aren't heating, the element(s) is bad.
