Place the document you want to fax in the automatic document feeder (on top) face up. You can fax from the "platen" (the part with the glass) by placing face down.
The telephone wire goes in the "L" hole and then to your telephone wall jack Your cable to the computer goes in the other slot next to the "L" hole and then to one of the USB ports on the back of the computer. you can print a report to see if it was successful bu going tomenu and following the steps. You can always go to Canon and search and download a manual. Good luck

I want to connect my fax from my cannon mx340 and dont have a instuction manuel can some help me?

Plug in the RJ-11 cable at the phone jack and the MX340. Press the Fax button and then the Menu button to get the Fax Settings menu. Press the left/right arrows to highlight Fax Receive Mode. Then press OK. Select Telephone Priority Mode (you will always pick up the handset and then put it down if the call is a fax. If an answering machine is connected the Fax will be automatically answered), Fax Priority Mode (the fax will be automatically received. If you hear the machine's ringtone, pick up the handset and press Stop to answer the call.), Fax only or DRPD (distinctive ring - available extra from your telephone company). Press OK to save the setting. If you choose DRPD, you will need to teach the distinctive ring by calling the MX340 after setting the machine to listen to the ring. (See the manual.) To fax out, press Fax, put your item to fax face up in the ADF and then dial the fax number of your receipient.

Canon has the manuals for the Pixma MX340 available here: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx340?selectedName=BrochuresAndManuals#BrochuresAndManuals .

I hope this helps.

Should print be facing down on machine or up?

Generally face DOWN. depends on how image is scanned though. If it goes in vertical usually image is towards you, Flat scanners, face down on glass.

How do i send a fax

Using it as a stand alone fax, plug a telephone cord in the botton jack on the cannon that is labled L then plug in the other end of the phone cord in a jack on your wall and that is all to it. The paper goes in face down, dial the number and listen for the dial tone and then the high pitch tone which indicates that it is communicating.....

Yeah, I had the same problem with my Pixma MP830 and I had to pay $9.99 for the solution. :P I called Canon’s technical support for help even though I have an expired warrantee, so that’s why this little piece of information was so expensive. Oh well, at least I didn’t cry and I’m happy that it’s fixed. lol
So this is the problem, just like everyone keeps saying: THE USB CORD IS IN THE PHONE JACK AND THE FAX THINKS THAT THE PRINTER IS “ON HOOK.” The thing is, in the back of the printer you have a column of jacks, the one on top has an icon of a phone and the one on bottom has a picture of an “L” or laptop. TAKE YOUR USB CORD OUT OF EITHER ONE OF THOSE, NO MATTER WHICH ONE IT MAY BE. What you may not have figured out by now is that there is a THIRD jack that is nowhere near those two. If you’re facing the front of the printer to the far right of the backside of the machine, there is this deep cavity that has your third, miracle jack in it. It’s even more to the right than the two jacks I described previously and its icon looks like a sideways, three-pronged cactus. Plug the square end of the USB cord into that jack, and the In Use/Memory light should stop blinking, and your printer can stop acting like car because the annoying, turn-signal clicking should stop as well. :)
You’re problem was probably the same as mine, when you moved your printer, you neglected to find your instructions manual (because you probably neglected to put that in a safe placed too lol) and you forgot which jack the USB cord went into.
Well, I hope my help was clear and that my $9.99 can go towards helping all those with this same problem and that you get some use out of my own stupidity and what seems like a waste of my money. lol
