Fridge S/N is MFQ702718 12 y.o. req's a serv call + new thermostat (min). Should I pay for service call & repair or replace fridge now during the January sales?

the price of a service call plus labor time plus parts will probably be half the price of a new unit
If the problem is compressor then that will be almost the price of a new unit
I would suggest that you consider the new unit plus an extended warranty

The freeze protection thermostat has gone bad.
To confirm this, disconnect wiring from freeze control.

Freeze control can be purchased separately.
Search: Intermatic Freeze Protector
For example, Smarthome:

I am familiar with wiring for Intermatic pool controls.

The freeze protection just quit qorking when it dropped to freezing i turned the dial to 45 and it still will not come on has been working non stop for about 4 days. i am in the dfw area

You can replaced the freeze control without buying entire timer:

Google: "Intermatic thermostat freeze control" to see cross selection of choices.
For example Smarthome sells PF1103 for $80: works for 120 or 240
http://www.smarthome.com/42699/Intermatic-PF1103M-120-240V-Freeze-Protection-Control-Timer-Mechanism/p.aspx

To prevent freezing right now, the pump should run full time, so pull trippers off the timer dial, and mover override lever to ON position. This will keep the pump running.
When the temperature rises, put trippers back on dial, and then order new part.

My PF1202T was running non-stop, as if it were in freeze protection mode even when it was 50 degrees. I took cover off and checked connections on relay and thermostat. Everything felt fine, put back...

I'd be inclined to say the thermostat is the culpret. You can test the thermostat and the relay with one test. First, turn the power to the timer OFF, of course. Then disconnect the two wires that connect to the thermostat and temporarily wire nut them together. Turn the power back ON, (you should hear the relay kick in) and carefully untwist the wirenut to break the circuit. If the pumps turn OFF you know the thermostat is bad. If the pumps stay ON, the contacts on the relay are sticking closed, causing the pumps to always be ON.

To be safer, you can turn the circuit OFF first, make sure no thermostat wires (that you previously disconnected) are touching anything and turn the circuit back ON. The pumps should stay OFF. If they come ON, the contacts on the relay are sticking closed.

Alternatively you can temporarily wire a single pole switch in place of the thermostat.

Since the timer on the left (filter pump) feeds the load side of the relay, which in turn feeds the second timer, it's also possible that the contacts on the timer on the left are sticking closed.

Remember that the only thing that controls the relay is the thermostat.

Scalding hot water

If your water is too hot, then either the water tank thermostat or the wiring to the indoor unit is defective. When the water reaches the set temperature, then the tank thermostat contacts should open up and shut off the combustion unit. If the combustion unit does not shut off, then check all wiring and relays. A manual is located at http://www.scribd.com/doc/29550374/Amana-HTM-Plus-Manual
