Question about Xantrex Technology Electronics - Others
The red light fault you experienced was from the short, which caused an 'overload' on the device. It is designed to shut itself down under such conditions so as to not cause major harm to the unit.
It may correct the fault indication after the short is removed (ie: no more playing with electronics when you are not so trained), and the unit should work again.
Your mention of the fuses being in a "very tight spot" is typical in most such devices to make them as small and inconspicuous as possible. Working on such devices requires the technical expertise in dismantling and testing, then making needed repairs before again restoring the proper construction. Be very careful because you can damage other components by not handling carefully, and with the proper equipment.

It doesn't work at all
If your dishwasher doesn't work at all, check these:
Power from the house Is there power getting to the dishwasher? This can be difficult to test, because dishwashers are usually wired directly to an electrical circuit, rather than plugged into the wall. But at least check for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
Door switch The door switch is important because, if it's defective, the dishwasher won't work at all. To reach it, you need to remove the control panel cover, or sometimes the interior liner of the door. If it's defective, you need to completely replace it.
Wiring Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the dishwasher, burns and breaks the connection. If that's the problem, the wires must be repaired/replaced as necessary. If that's not the problem, check the wiring to the door switch, the wiring between the door and the lower part of the dishwasher, and the wiring to the timer. Repair any broken, burned, brittle, or defective wiring, using the proper appliance-grade wire and connectors.
Timer or selector switch Although it's uncommon, the timer or the selector switch may be defective. If so, you need to replace the defective part, because neither of these can be repaired.

SOURCE: Wiring Door jamb switch
I'm going to guide you on how to create what is known as a "switch leg".
1- run a 12-2 w/ground wire to the light fixture from new switch.
2- connect black wire "hot wire" to the shiny bronze tinted terminal on switch.
3- connect the white wire " neutral " to the silver connection on switch.
4- connect the naked copper wire " ground " to the ground terminal on switch
5- Disconnect the two white wires in the junction box from each other.
6- Connect the ground to ground in j-box
7- Connect the black to one of the whites in j-box
8- connect the white to the other white in j-box
9- wire nut and tape all connections
Oh and be sure that you turn off the breaker before you start. Hope this helps. Good luck.

SOURCE: my Xantrex rs400 stop working
First and foremost, It's a piece of ****!
I've been fighting with Xantrex for 3 years now and after 3 replacements I'm still stuck with the same erratic behavior. I don't trust it and Xantrex is not even responding anymore.
This is my review at Amazon
I know this is not helping you much but I thought it would be nice to know that you are not alone!
