Without a bit more info, I can't say for sure. I have the same drive, it's been around for a while now and if yours has had a lot of use then I would expect it to fail soon. Has it been dropped? this could cause a bad connection between the internal drive and the usb/e-sata module or caused the HDD to fail. Have you tried a different usb cable? any printer usb cable would work. Finally, the internal HDD can be easily swapped/replaced by anybody confident with a screwdriver.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.

My hddr640e04xr is not detected

You don't need to have a driver for your external HDD to work.

You have three possible problems:

1. USB port (software problem) - outdated USB driver or with bugs

Try updating them via the device manager. Or you can try uinstalling it then scan for hardware changes. It will automatically reinstall.

2. USB port (hardware problem) - try a different USB port.

3. HDD defective - You may want to try connecting it to a different computer. If it doesn't work in a different computer then it should be defective.

When i plug my 4g cruzer micro usb memory stick nothing happens the cpmuter dosnt read that it is plugged in

Try a different USB device on each of the USB ports on your computer.
Hopefully, all your USB ports are working correctly.

Try a different USB port on your computer.
Hopefully, the SanDisk will be detected on one of the ports.

Try a USB port on a different computer.
If the SanDisk still is not detected, then spend $10 to buy a new 4GB flash-drive.

Computer is saying it has malfunctioned.

Well, it probably does have a problem if it worked on this same computer before without a problem. You could try the memory stick in the following to isolate the source:

1) try in a different USB port (to see if it is USB port related - only this port has failed - others ports will work).
2) try in a port on a different USB controller (to see if it is USB controller related - all ports on this controller will fail. Other ports on other controllers will work).
3) try in a different computer (to see if it is related to the USB stick itself ).
4) repeat the process with known good USB device such as a mouse or other storage device (this will confirm or cast doubt on the results found above).

That's about all you can do. Retire or replace the source of the problem. I hope thgis helps - good luck!

Sony NEX-3 - I can't seem to connect to my computer with USB connection. Camera is on and cord for usb is attached

Hi there, If you haven't already done so... Try connecting to a different USB port, or on a different computer. I noticed on my brothers computer, that when I use one USB port - doesn't work, but the other one does (probably something faulty inside on one of them). Also can try connecting using another different cord...
Hope you can get connected... ****.

The flip mino hd usb won't plug into most of my usb ports (And yes, I know the difference between a firewire and usb). I have tried it on four different computers with a total of 10 usb ports. it worked...

My flip mino hd USB also will not plug into my MacBook Pro.  I've tried it on 3 different machines and it will only fit into one port, and not at all easy into that port.  When I look at the USB connector on the device, there appears to be slight raised plastic ridged on the outside ends of the connector.

PLEOMAX 5GB Thumbdrive

Do you see a message on your system tray when it is plugged in? If you don't see any message, it means that the drive is not being detected. You can't retrieve any data or files on the thumb drive if it is not detected. Things you can try to isolate the problem:

1. Try a different USB port on your computer. Check if your thumb drive will be detected.

2. Try a different USB device like mouse on your USB port. If it is detected, it means that the problem is the thumb drive. If not, it means that the USB port is not working or is disabled.

3. Try the thumb drive on a different computer.

Hope this helps. ;-)
