Question about RCA D52W20 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

2 Answers

I have a RCA HDTV D52W20B...and the unit started going off..power light flashes three times and stays off...sometimes it will come on for alittle while then goes back off. I have been reading some of the links about replacing the bad caps...but are they located on the power supply or the other main board ?? does anyone have any pics showing the correct board ?? I can replace them but just need to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any help !! Ken kwstovall@sbcglobal.net

Its definitely the power board or the deflection board(high voltage circuit). We should start by looking on the power supply board. It is the one into which the power cord plugs. Look for faulty electrolytic caps(cylindrical objects with X mark at the top) which are bulged, cracked or have holes in them near the X mark. If you can get me an image of the board, I can mark the faulty caps for you.

The black colored rubber cover of the wire should first be pulled up the wire(it slides on the wire) and the wire should just be pulled from the transformer. This pic should summarize the situation

Yes you can just pull out the wires. It shouldn't be too hard but make sure that you slide the boot up the wire first. As for the power supply, I wouldn't come to any conclusions so soon, but we should first replace the parts that look faulty and then see if it works. So lets start with the capacitor.

Its the deflection board AKA HV board.

Yes. In cases like this its either the HV board or the power supply. And be careful with the flyback. Let me know how ti goes.

Please upload the image to imageshack.us and get me the direct link. In the image you sent me, I can hardly see it!

Seen the image. I thought I already told you how to remove the red one?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jan 05, 2011

You need to keep twisting it from side to side as you pull. Ofcourse you have to pull it hard.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jan 05, 2011

The black wire has to be dealt with on the board end. It does not pull out

Actually none of the caps look bad to me, unless you have already removed it. If thats the case then solder a replacement and see if does the trick.

Oh yeah! I see them. Could not spot them from the top view. Ok replace them and see if it resolves the problem and let me know

Hello; I am John at J D Electronics in Poland Maine. I have had an RCA model M50WH72S setting dead in my shop for over a year now and is now mine. Your set may be of the same design. If so, The power supply is the likely cause of failure due to bad CHEAP caps. If it is like mine, the Power Supply board is on the left SIDE of the chassis. Any capacitors that have DOMED or SPLIT tops are bad. The set would start intermittently and run for an hour and die. Other times it would not start at all and the LED would flash 5 or 6 times and stop. With NO SUPPORT from Thomson/ RCA, I was on my own. The extended warranty Co said to try the light engine first. I replaced the light engine with no improvement, just the led flashing. I was not going to pay 500 to 700 dollars for other boards to try to fix this piece of JUNK.I have since read several blogs that point to power supply caps as being the problem. I took this piece of junk apart for the last time before I hauled it to the dump. I pulled out the power supply on the left as you face the back of set. I noticed 2 Electrolytic caps had " domed shaped tops ,which is a good sign of failure or overheating. They are 1000 ufd @ 35Volts 105 degree rating. They were both bad along with 2 more on the same board ! They are labeled CP624 and CP647 on the bottom edge of the board inside the "c" shaped heat sink. The other two are above the chopper transformer labeled CP641 @ CP639. replacing these fixed the set. Call DigiKey 800-344-4539 part # 493-1588 are ten for $7.00. Don't spend money on a lamp you don't need. If this looks like yours, you can send it to me to have the 4 caps replaced for $48 to include labor , caps and return 48 state shipping. Hello; I have no access to RCA service manuals. I did find out that you have a CRT set and not the DLP I was talking about. This is my mistake. The model numbers looked similar. John
