Wireless card problems

My wirless signal strength keeps going from top to bottom all the time and disconnecting me within seconds My computer does not recognize my internal wireless card. I looked in my drivers to fix the problem, but the driver for wireless is gone. What can I do?

I am running Windows XP and I have a Linksys Wireless adapter. Since my wireless network card is not working, I have to plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, and I would rather use the wireless. Any help would be appreciated.

What virus checker are you using? Is there also a different firewall apart from the windows one. If you have blocked your connections it will prevent you from using your wireless effectvely. Uninstall or disable the virus checker and see if the same happens. Also are you using E internet, try mozilla firefox and see if the same happens.
Another thing to check is if the adapter is using the windows manager properly. What you need to do to check it follow the following instructions.

  • Click on start and choose CONNECT TO option and click on your wireless adapter. (Wireless network connection)
  • Click on View Wireless networks
  • Scroll on your network connection and then click on change advanced settings
  • Now double click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP
  • Make sure both settings are set to automatically detect DNS address and IP address
  • Then select apply if need to change and ok to continue
  • Now click on the Tab Wireless Networks
  • Wait a few seconds and Now make sure the top box which says "Use windows to configure my wireless network" has a tick next to it, if now click on box.
  • Click on Apply and ok, or just ok if no apply option
  • Close all windows and restart computer.
  • Now see if the device connects and click on your browser and see how it works.
Any questions if still not working please give details.

CONTINUAL DISCONNECTION OF WIRELESS CONNECTION
There are a few things that can cause you to lose wireless connection with your wireless router. 1. Weak signal strength, check the signal strength on your wireless card. If it is weak move the wireless router away from brick or concrete walls and if possible locate the wireless router higher up. 2. Have you secured your wireless router from people near your from unauthorized access? i.e. change the default password, setup encryption use WPA2 or WPA, change the default SSID, and turn off SSID broadcast, and for added protection, enable MAC address filtering which allows only the MAC address/es of your wireless card/s to connect to your wireless router. 3. You could be getting interference from electrical sources such as air conditioners, arc welders, washing machines etc. If so, the power supply to the wireless routers and computers etc should be connected to a surge protection power board, better still connect your computer equipment to an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). 4. Check the channels of the wireless routers and access points in your area and change the broadcast channel on your wireless router to an unused channel or one that is currently used but has the weakest signal strength. This will minimize interference with your wireless router from other wireless routers and access points in your area.

ADAPTER not working

Check the distance bet computer and the Router.
Donot keep your router near television, microwaveoven or any radio active devces, it may reduce the performance.
Check the Antena terminals for any loose connections.
If possible check your wireless signal strength with another Laptop, to diagnose the router is working fine.
If everything seems to be fine, it maybe the issue with the Adapter.

Wirless signal problem

Make sure there is no interference, such as microwaves or cell phones that operate at 2.4ghz. Do you have many thick inside walls between your router and your computer? You could try a signal boosting antenna to attach to your router.

WIRELESS NETWORKING

There are several problems reported that may cause disconnection. First is the hiding of the SSID (wireless network name) and enabling WEP or WPA encryption. The recommended solution for that is to unhide the SSID in the router configuration.

Second is that there are more and more wireless devices and occasionally interference occurs on a single channel (even from non computer devices like wireless phones. As routers are often set to channel 6 you may be competing for radio communications with your neighbors. The recommendation is to switch the router to either channel 1 or 11. If your first choice does not work try the other.

Disconnects while working.

it may be as simple as the wireless connection signal strength, as doors, solid walls or any solid object that is in it's line will cause the signal to be very low, and at that point it will disconect from the internet as it is unable to send packets of information to your wireless card from the router. You can try your router in another telephone point that is nearer the pc to see if the connection drops, or use a different channel number which can be changed in the routers settings and the wireless cards properties as interference from other electrical appliances on the MHZ level can cause signal loss. Laptops tend to suffer less with the signal loss because they normally have a signal booster in the screen of the laptop within the wireless receiver ariel.
