Question about Garmin nuvi 255W GPS Receiver
I had the same problem and wrote Garmin for help. Here is the solution:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be glad to help you with this. Please check the voice settings of your Nüvi. Starting on the main menu, select: Tools (wrench)> Settings> Language> Voice. The voice setting should be set on an option with (TTS). This stands for "text-to-speech" and is function of the unit that allows it to speak actual street names.
In other words you must choose a language with (TTS) after it such as American English-Jill (TTS)
I hope this helps everyone.

You probably have gotten corrupt data in your unit. You need to reset the master data base. Caution, this will erase all of your personal data so back it up on your computer if you don't want to loose your favorites, etc.
Turn the unit off.
With your right thumb hold pressure down on the bottom right corner of your screen.
While holding down your right thumb, turn the unit on with your left hand.
You will get a message asking if you really want to reset the database. Remove your right thumb from the screen and answer yes.
You will have to answer a few set up questions after that.
You should be able to test your unit and have the voice guidance begin speaking street names again.
Worked on mine.
