Does the correction tape move? Does it lift up to the proper height? If it does both of these try advancing it a few inches the tapes get old and the exposed portion won't work. If this helps but it isn't real good get a fresh (not one that has been sitting on the shelf for years and thes will help.

I installed new correction tape, but there's too much play in it. It keeps unravelling. I have no idea how to tighten it up. When I turn the take-up spool, it just unravels it more without tightening...

Verify that you have installed the proper correction tape. The types of tape that can be used with this system are: Item 1030 - Correctable Film Ribbon, 1230 - Correctable Film Ribbon 2pack, 1031 - Multi Strike Ribbon, 1032 - Nylon Ribbon, 3010 - Lift-off correction tapes (to be used with 1030 and 1230 ribbons), 4010 Cover-up Correction tape (to be used with 1031 and 1032 ribbons).
Make sure that the correction tape is installed properly. Pass the tape through the left guide, behind the ribbon guide and out through the right guide. The rough side of the tape should face the platen. Attach the feeder spool to the pin on the left. Attach the take up spool to the pin on the right. Turn the take up spool counter clockwise until a small amount of tape has wound around it. Replace the cassette ribbon and close the case cover. Press [CODE] + [RESET] to move the carrier to the previous position.

Typewriter won't erase letters completely.

Correction tapes do have a shelf life and can dry out. You should try replacing the correction tape and see if it is better. If that does not fix it, does the tape lift up high enough to cover the entire letter? If not, you have a lifting problem and will need a tech to fix it.

The correction tape isn't working. it's installed properly, i think, but it doesn't erase anything.

Try taking the tape out and re-installing with the "dull" side towards the paper...if that doesn't work try a new correction tape.

Warning sound, didn't move

Check to be sure the correction tape isn't tangled in the print wheel. If it is or was check the wheel to be sure it isn't damaged,
Then try it without the correction tape.

Trying to replace the lift-off tape on an IBM Selectric III

Open the gray lever to the right on the carrier.this will release tension on the correcting tape. Now put the supply spool on the left side and bring the take up spool across in front of the card holder. There is a little black wire just right of the card holders opening that looks kind of like a bobby pin , this is the
separator between the ribbon and the correcting tape. The ribbon is in front toward you and the correcting tape is behind. Continue feeding the correcting tape to the take up wheel and take up the slack in the tape then close gray lever.

Brother EM-530 corrective tape appears to be broken

Be sure the tape is installed with the dull side facing the platen. The tapes are readly available but be sure it is a dry L/O tape General ribbon T355 or equivlent.

Correction Tape

Two possibilities, one the correction tape is twisted and the wrong side is .facing the paper. The shinny side should be facing you, the dull side facing the paper. Second possibility you must make sure the ribbon is compatible with the correction tape. There are 2 types of ribbons. A correctable one (orange or yellow knob) and a multi strike (blue or purple knob on ribbon cartridge). The lift off correction tape (orange or yellow spools) only works with the correctable ribbon and the cover up correction tape (blue) works with the multistrike ribbon.

Correction tape

To replace the correction tape:

1) use [SPACE BAR] or <<-¦ to move the carrier to the centre of the platen
2) open the top cover
3) remove the cassette ribbon (if installed)
4) pull off both spools, pressing against the correction tape with your thumbs. Bring it back to a position parallel with the platen and lift it up and out.
5) Pass the new tape through the left guide, behind the ribbon guide, and out thropugh the right guide. The rough (stick) side of the tape should face the platen.
6) Attach the feeder spool to the pin on the left
7) Attach the take-up spool to the pin on the right
8) Turn the take-up spool counter-clockwise until a small amount of white tape has wound around it
9) Replace the cassette ribbon and close the top cover
10) Press 'spider web' key +// to move the carrier to the previous position.

Hope this helps.

Correction tape not working

The ribbons and lift off tapes both get old and change composition, get a fresh ribbon and L/O tape then try it.
