Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

For no reason whatsoever, my Maxtor external drive stopped appearing in My Computer. I've tried on three different computers, but each one only gets me the following message: "Error 10, The device cannot start" That's funny, right? The disks are spinning, the green light is glowing. How do I get this to appear in My Computer, and every other file tree I need to get at to access the data on this drive?

Yep --the disc is spinning , the lights are on BUT the pickup arm that reads the disc is not working
Time to consider a new unit preferably a solid state unit that has no moving parts to wear out

The harddrive itself has gone bad, only solution would be to replace the HDD inside the enclosure :-( sorry.

SOURCE: I've had my Maxtor external hard.

You may want to move the drive to a new enclosure or get the power supply checked.

removing the drive and connecting it to a suitable PC would tell you right away if it was the drive or the enclosure that was at fault.

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

When I click on My computer, the maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus

Hi there,
You can try installing the drivers for the hard disk. Usually XP and vista operating systems detect the drives and install the drivers by themselves. But sometimes there are compatibility issues, which then require manual installation of drivers. I wonder what the operating system on your computer is. Please get back to me if you need further assistance.
Hope this helps :)

You did well to have it work so long!
It is out of warranty - open it up, remove the drive from the case. It may be a SATA drive, but probably an IDE from 4 years ago...

Just place it in your computer and it should work fine. The most common problem is the controller card for the external connection has failed. so putting it in your computer as a normal drive will either fix it - or tell you that the drive has died.

Unlocking external drive

You may have the encryption set on the drive - meaning it needs a password to access the Maxtor. Is this problem on the original computer you installed the Maxtor or on a different machine? Either way try reinstalling the Maxtor software. If you do not have it you can get it online at:

- Do you hear any beep sound when you plug in the USB drive into the laptop? - You can also try a different USB cable - Try connecting the hard drive to a different computer and see if it works All those steps will help you determine where the issue is. Please revert back with any other observations. Good Luck
