Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a Maytag PTB1954 . Freezer above fridge. Purchased in 2002 and still under warranty . Has 10 year Parts and Labour on all parts of the refridgerant system. Repair man tells me that the refridgerant is low and that it is from a slow leak. He surmised it is on the condenser side and is looking to replace the condenser.I told him that for the last 18 months I have heard sort of a "Marbles in a box" sound when the compressor starts up or shuts down. He said it was not related. I didnt propose this to him but I feel that the compressor could have experienced cavitation and could be damage because of the lack of refridgerant. Is this likely? Should the compressor also be suspect? Also, how can I be sure he got the leak? Shouldnt he test for where the leak is, it could be in fitting or something..

SOURCE: 'ice dam' on bottom of freezer, now problems with fluctuating temps

Kat, you only have 1 problem happening. And no this is not due to the original repair. (though I have to admit... replacing the filter/drier, starter and compressor is NOT part of routine maintenance and has me a little befuddled.) Your evaporator drain is plugged. Most likely with what we in the biz call "bio-gookus". This is normal, but must be cleared to keep the water from puddling and coming out your freezer door. With the evap panel removed and the drain hole exposed, pour 1/4 cup of HOT water into the drain hole. Use a small screwdriver or other small instrument to pick out the ice buildup. Once this is clear, use something like this http://www.azpartsmaster.com/shopazp/Gallo+Condensate+Blowout+Guns+(A66800).html to blow out the rest of the lines. After doing this, pour more hot water into the drain to verify free flow. This will take care of your leak problem. Now... the frost buildup. NEVER RUN YOUR FRIDGE WITH THE PANELS OFF! They are there for a reason, believe it or not. They direct air flow across the coils (both evaporative and condensing). Frost buildup is normal, though you may be experiencing higher levels of frost because of the panel missing...Your fridge utilizes an automatic defrost system. It'll initiate every 8 hours. This is controlled by a timer located in your fresh food section. The defrost heater RARELY fails on these. Fix the evaporator drain and replace all panels. This will solve your dilemma.

SOURCE: My admiral fridge freezer suddenly stopped working -

I took the time to look up your Model # and you do have the right board. Jazz 14 Should just be a revision one higher than your origional. Describe to me exactly what happens when you try to program it. You may be missing one little step. Make sure you are doing every step exactly right. I too can miss one little confirmation stroke and it seems like it wont work. I Can email you the tech sheet for your model. This will show you how to test all the sensors, and the damper to determine why the FF side is getting too cold. I will also help on my end as much as i can

SOURCE: MAYTAG SIDE BY SIDE FRIDGE FREEZER STAINLESS STEEL

The problem will come back in about a week once the coils frost up again. This seems to be a common problem with these refrigerators. I had the same problem a while back. Sounds like your defrost board is dead. part number is 12002104. You can find it at searspartsdirect.com

Compressor problem. There are start components mounted on the side of the compressor, and should be removed and tested. The parts include the start relay, (start/run capacitor if it has one) and the overload switch.
To test these components you must have a working knowledge of electrical an use of a good VOM meter.
If not, remove the parts, and take them to an appliance parts house. They usually are happy to test them for you.
If they test O.K. you have a failed compressor.
P.S. If this machine is under 5 years old, the compressor is under warranty, (some have an extended 10 year warranty). if the warranty is in effect, do nothing. Call the dealer who would handle the warranty. You would have to pay for replacement of the start components, but having it serviced by an authorized warranty station will keep the balance of the compressor warranty in effect. Hope this helps... Not cooling - part replaced 2X - happening again

Yeah, buy a Kenmore next time. I have one of these JUNK Maytags and less than 5 years the compressor is shot. The 15 year old Kenmore in the garage that has never had the coils cleaned is still going STRONG.

One doesnt like to hear it but possibly cut your losses and look for a less complicated fridge with minimum electronics.

Not getting cold, staying around 48 - 50 F

Check the condenser coils. These are located at the rear, behind the panel. There should be frost all over the coils.
If not, and the frost is just on the first section then this indicates a slow refridgerant leak. I purchased mine in 2002 and it came with a 10 years parts and labour warranty on all parts of the refridgerant system. So hope you hung onto all your documents.

Compressor bad on my freezer. can this be fixed

The compressor can be replaced but it's often not worth doing. If it's under a year old it should be fully covered under warranty. If it's under 10 years old, the parts may be covered under warranty. In that case the labour is probably worth paying for. If you have your manual check in there for your warranty information. Good luck!

Temp

I've had my Samsung RS267 LASH side by side for almost 2 years now and the coils froze recently. The temperatures displayed - relating to the refirgerator side - bounce around when the coils freeze. My freezer thank goodness is still working properly. The repairman indicated that the heating element for the refrigerator coils was bad. Unfortunately he had to order the whole unit (coils, heating element, etc.) since he couldn't replace just the one part. Samsung takes their time sending the parts - we've been waiting for 10 days now. The Samsung warranty covers the compressor, evaporator, condensor, drier and connecting tube for 5 years parts and labor so we should becovered. You might be covered as well - depending on when you purchased your refrigerator. I did purchase a separate extended warranty from Lowes when I bought the refrigerator and I'm glad I did. My extended warranty included $250 in food spoilage covering our food loss due to the breakdown. Hope this helps......

REF AND FREEZER STOP COOLING

We had a repairman come out, said it was the compressor, bad news...$650 if he repaired...good news...compressor under manufacturer's warranty for five years so you may want to call Maytag. It will be less expensive if the part is covered and you only have to pay for labor. Hope this helps. Bought our fridge 12/2004 so it was covered.

Maytag Ice20 refrigerator

Thanks, Solution #3, for the phone number ((800) 688-9900)! We, too, have the Ice2O refrigerator, and the HV Board started the disco light show last night. Followed instructions above to disable it, which temporarily solved the problem. Was on the phone with Maytag (Whirlpool?) this AM, and their initial response was that they wouldn't cover anything since we are out of warranty. I had to be extremely firm with my expectation that all parts and labor would be covered. Sent the rep back to her supervisor several times until they agreed to cover both. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don't give up until everything is covered. This is a design issue that should NOT be impacted by an expired warranty!
