Sounds like an inverter problem. If your laptop is still under warranty, send it in for repair. If not, and you know a little something about taking laptops apart, then you can take the screen a part and see the inverter behind the screen. It is long and skinny and has wires coming out of both ends, one side going to bulb, the other to the motherboard. Inverters are fairly cheap, and easy to replace... it's getting to it that is a pain.
