I have a Cobra 29ltd CB with no sound coming from the internal or external speakers. So I went out and bought another Cobra 29ltd thinking that the old one was shot. Hooked up the new one and the same...

are you using the antennas that are installed thru the mirrors or the ones on the side of the truck. If you are using them you should make sure that they are connected to the coax. some just get thrown together ,antenna to mount then one end of coax to ??? so take a multi meter and set it on x1.Touch bottom of the antenna and the connector that come out of the dash. If you are connected you should get a reading. If you are not ,then you will have a problem hearing anyone because you are not connected to the antenna but the coax. If the connection is good to go then I would try running a ground wire to the chassie and maybe even a ground strap.

I can't here people talking

There are some things that can cause this to happen that are simple fixes, and then others are issues inside the radio that need a tech's diagnosis.

I will give you the simple issues.

  • RF gain is down. turn it all the way clockwise.
  • Squelch is too high, turn it down until you hear fuzz, then turn it up until it stops.
  • You my have a problem with your mic. When there is a broken wire in the mic cord then the radio will not go into receive mode. Try a new mic.
  • You may have an antenna or coax problem. Make sure the antenna is tuned to the best SWR, and make sure there is no damage to the coax.
Hope this helps.

I have a cobra 29ltd crome had echo board installed works good till i trun my la 900 on get feed back or squilling how do i fix

LA 900? I am guess that is a linear amplifier. If so are you running a power mic? You are probably getting RF feedback. You need to turn the gains on the radio and mic down.

Some things you can try. Hold the mic cord in your other hand in the center of the cord while you key it. some times this will shield it form stray RF.

You can also get a bunch of RF chokes from radio shack. They are little black things you snap onto wires that shield form RF. Put 2 near the plug, and 2 near the mic. That will help shield it from RF.

you will most likely still have to play with the gains on the radio and mic to find a sweet spot where it doesn't squeel.

Lot of fed back

Make sure the antenna has a good clean ground. I know it sounds silly, but here's what's happening: You're getting RF feedback. If you don't have a good ground at the antenna, some of the RF travels back down the coax and makes the whole radio "hot". Some of that RF couples back into the microphone input, and causes feedback.

It's also possible that if your amp is really big, you're getting RF feedback directly from the antenna itself due to the really strong field.

You could try moving the antenna further away from the radio, or if that's not practical, some snap on ferrite chokes (available at radio shack) around the mic cable near where it enters the radio will probably solve the problem.

My cobra 29ltd classic turns on but nothing else works. the meter dose not move when I key it up, and no one can hear me

Hello jeffssmit909,

This is an indication of the final RF power amplifier malfunctioning. First if you have a background in electronics you can get the schematic and measure the voltage levels with a multimeter to determine if the RF power amplifier stages or bad, in addition I would check the power supply section to.

By the way is the audio work, in other words can you hear other CB's when you turn your system on? Please reply, it will help in the diagnosis.

This is a good starting point. let me know how this turns out.

Thank you,
