Thanks for the added layers of information + sadness, although (like most electronics) they have shorter lifetimes. Is there anything I can repair on my own or reasonably hire a technician? Back engine of TV is totally enclosed.

For a minimal investment and maximal pain, having to anticipate replacement is another chapter. Judging from the response, spending a fortune to repair the unit is silly if a flat-screen replacement, of the same dimensions, is necessary. **Somehow, I think there may be some A/B unit & hookup interference with connected devices. With my amateur expertise, it's possible to disconnect some wiring to know if wattage problems, using Verizon FiOs may be contributing to "no picture" problems. Thanks...

You have a regulator problem in the power supply. Possibly capacitors, (tuning).
As a company, I cunducted research on the average life time of a TV.
Rental sets, around 5 years.
Owned sets 6-7 years, before they become uneconomical to repair.
Hope that helpsw.

The reason the picture is thinking is because the power supply is dieding, if you remove the back and look on the power supply module you will see a couple of electrolytic caps that is bulged, and need to be replace, or just buy a new power supply module and change it out and it will be fix.

How can I get Dynex TV out of "protection mode"?

the protected mode kicks in when there is a safety issue with the receiver. This usually comes from an overload to the system via a short in the system or perhaps a surge in power. Your receiver shuts down, and you'll need to shut the entire system down to fix it.
In some older homes, some of the wiring doesn't deliver the "cleanest" power, delivering minor power surges to the items you plug directly into the wall. If your receiver is plugged directly into the wall, purchase a surge protector to stop this

How can i connect my 32" sony bravia?because the

Route the television audio directly through a stereo receiver. Connect the audio outputs of the television to the audio inputs of the receiver, using digital (coaxial or optical) or RCA (left and right audio) cables. Connect the left and right stereo speaker to the corresponding terminals on the receiver. Be sure that the positive and negative terminals of each speaker and the receiver are correctly lined up

Use a cable box. If your television doesn't have audio outputs, as many older TVs don't, use the outputs from a cable box to route your sound to the receiver. Proceed with a digital or RCA connection as described for the TV

Use a VCR. If you don't have a cable box, run the cable from the wall outlet into your VCR and then instead of outputting the audio to the TV, output it to the receiver so that you'll get sound from cable programming through the receiver and to the speakers, rather than to the TV. Connect the video output from the VCR directly to the TV for the easiest setup. You will then need to control your television programming with the VCR.

Change the program mode on the receiver to the input category you used to input the audio; for example, "TV," "Cable" or "Aux" are common options. You should now be able to hear audio from television programs on your speakers.

No play back from HDTV to threater system

Do you have set-top-box or antenna-cable directly to TV?
You have connected TV with received via HDMI, but that won't work in this direction - TV has HDMI INput only, not output.
You can use HDMI to connect HDMI-out on DVD player for example to HDMI-in on receiver and HDMI-out of receiver to HDMI-in on TV.
But to get sound from TV to the receiver, use spdif optical or coax cable if TV supports that - this way you will get surround sound.
But also your connection via analog white/red RCA plugs should work, but only for stereo sound.
