My girlfriend has an 11yr old Kenmore 80 series top-loader. All cycles function however, after agitation the drum will not spin. She then opens and closed the door and the drum begins to spin. She says she has to do this twice during each wash. When opening the door the drum rotates slightly and you can hear a click like a clutch engaging and the drum spins fine after that.

Thanks for the input. The click I was refering to is the sound of the motor/ clutch engaging. I will look at the door switch but was wondering if another switch is responsible for the clutch engagement?

    thanks

I bypassed the door switch to no avail. Still the same issue. The switch needs to be activated twice during each wash to initiate the spin cycle.

    Hi,

Check and see if the motor is getting power and not running...if it is getting power and not running then you have a motor with a flat spot...

The motor will have to be changed...

if no power to the motor then the timer contacts maybe going bad, and the timer will need to be replaced...

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

The click sound that you hear can be from the lid switch that is not allowing the unit to spin. When the lid switch goes bad the washer won't spin and at times won't even agitate. You can try to jump the lid switch before you replace it and see if that makes any difference. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Agitator does NOT spin along w/ drum during spin cycle

If this is the old style that uses a belt, it is not worth fixing. But the problem sounds like the wig-wam is not functioning properly. Most of the time it was a wire broken since it moves back and forth constantly.

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

Kenmore 80's series top loader only works on wash and rinse cycle

This is a problem with the pump being stuck so the motor cant turn the whole thing. Turn the washer on its side, underneath you can acces the pump, which is connected to the motor by two long clips. remove the pump and take out the colg that caused it to get stuck.
