I have a Vostro 1500 Dell laptop running Windows XP and just recently my CD/DVD drive has stopped working. I was wondering if I should reload my drivers and which ones I should download. Thanks, Mike Lemke

There aren't specific drivers for a CD/DVD drive, they came built in the windows installer. If you have problems with you CD/DVD drive, you will have to change it. It's very easy, you won't have to dissamble the laptop. You can see on youtube how to replace a CD/DVD drive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Nj_sizEBw8&feature=related. There are CD/DVD drivers for 10$ on second hand.

The good news is that your laptop powers on and you have a display. The bad news is that you laptop is trying to boot up from an OS (operating system software) like XP, Vista, or Win 7. Ether your software is corrupted or you have a problem with the hard drive or hard drive controller.
Press and hold the <Fn> key while powering the system on. This will run the Dell Diagnostics. Another more intense diagnostic program is located on a Dell CD that you should have received with your laptop. Look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities" listed under the "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To do this, power on your laptop and tap the <F12> key to bring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit <Enter> key. Select the "Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics".
If diagnostics pass then your software is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

first try this fixit tool

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

If that doesn't work, try swapping the drives between the systems and see if the issue follows the drive. If the issue follows the drive, replace it.

If the issue stays with the system, then it is either SW (the fixit link should help) or the MB contacts for the drive are bad.

Dell Vostro 1500 won't boot after downloading updates

What programs are installed on the machine? there may be a file that's conflicting with one of the updates. You may leave automatic updates turned off. Looking for the culprit will require and will be easier if a tech will check the computer onsite or thru remote access.

DELL Vostro 1500 causing many problems...

For using xp you must have the correct drivers. These should be available for download from the Dell support website. You may also find updating windows xp will help you may be using service pack one, so make sure all updates are done.

If you have to load drivers you should load the chipset first followed by the graphics then the sound. Check on your hardware list under system in control panel that there are no conflicts.

I hope this is helpful please rate the assistance given.
