My son's droid phone (the original with keyboard) automatically calls me at odd times. He says this is a universal problem with these phones. Please advise.

There were known issues with these models of phone, although it was not peculiar to all of the produced phones.
There are two major way to sort this problem out and i am going to analyze them for you carefully, please remember to comment or let me know wherever you do not understand.
First method that is mostly used by most users of this phone is the updating phone firmware.
This helps you to receive recent updates from the producing company and thereby, clearing or getting rid of any software related issues.
You can do this by following the link below and doing as the site says you should
http://support.vzw.com/information/droid_upgrade.html
The second method involves you flashing you phone by giving it to a technician or repairer but you must know that this is not the safest method so i would suggest you use the earlier method.
Hope this solution was helpful? Please comment for more information and thank you for using the fixya website

My motorola droid IHDP56KC1 front screen will not work and is calling people on its own, is this a malware issue or hardware?

I suggest to reset your device to its factory defaults, for you to check what is really happening.
How-To: Hard Reset your Motorola Droid To perform a hard reset on your Motorola Droid, perform the following steps.

  1. Turn off the Droid. If you are unable to turn off the Droid, remove the battery for 10 seconds, then replace it.
  2. Open the physical keyboard and press the X key while pressing and holding the Power Button. The device will turn on, keep holding these two buttons until a yellow triangle appears.
  3. Press the Volume Up and then the Camera button at the same time to get a menu to come up. You may have to press them more then once.
  4. You have now entered Recovery Mode.
  5. Use the Directional Pad on the Physical Keyboard to select theFormat option.

This should perform a factory reset of your device. You will of course lose all data. Please exercise caution before doing this without a backup.

* Note: Contacts, etc. should be backed up to the cloud, so you should be safe with your address book.

You might want to try a hard reset on the phone, it should put your phone back to normal if its a software issue, if its a hardware issue you might have to take the phone apart or send it in for repairs or warranty return.

You can hard reset your Motorola Droid if you want clear all of the data off of the device and start fresh. Here’s how it’s done.

1. Turn the Droid off. If it won’t turn off, take the battery out then place it back in.
2. Open the keyboard and press the X key while pressing and holding Power. The device will power on. Keep holding the buttons down until a yellow triangle appers.
3. Press the Camera and Volume Up buttons at the same time to get to the menu. (I had to press them several times).
4. Use the direction pad to the right of the keyboard to select the Format option.

Try to do a firmware restore to make sure your system is 100% intact.Ifit still doesn't work, there may be an issue with your logic board.Ifyou're not covered under warranty there are Droid Repair guides that show how to open a droid.Watchout for the ribbon cables, those tear easily. Replacement parts areusually available on Ebay. There are third party services that can do itfor you Droid Repair.
