Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Maytag Dryer Loud Shrieking Noise Maytag Intellidry Dryer D-4, 10 y/o, Model MDG9806aww (QuietPlus II). Replaced belt. Replaced two dryer drum rollers (just the wheels, the posts looked and felt OK, but what do I know?). When the belt is not connected and I turn the drum, I do not hear the noise. The situation has deteriorated -- it sounds as if metal is rubbing on metal. The clothes dry just fine and require the same amount of time as before. I did not use any grease or lubricants at any point, if that makes any difference. I would appreaciate any other things to look at. Thanks

My maytag dryer is having the exact same problem. Were you able to fix it? How much did it cost?

I have a Maytag LDE8824ACE dryer that is about 10 years old. It dries clothes fine, but the screeching noise is very loud. I will try the solution below, once the clothes that are in the dryer now are done!

loud screeching noise when dryer is on, same maytag LDE8824ACE. I don't see the "4" phillips screws just inside the front door as referenced. I do need to vacuum the inside of the unit and my guess is replace the belt... Any thoughts on opening up the unit?

Here we go. First unplug the unit. Remove the front panel by removing the 4 phillips screws just inside the door (on the hinges and just opposite). Next remove the greenish/ brown 5/16 screws that hold the front panel in. There are wires still connected (door switch and moisture sensor) but if you swing it to the side, you can leave them connected and still procede. Next, you have to reach underneath (very difficult to see this so you will have to do it by feel) There is a belt that wraps around the drum. On the underneath side of the drum as you follow the belt it wraps
around the motor pulley (small wheel) and the tensioner pulley (bigger wheel just to the right). Now with one hand, move the larger pulley towards the msaller one. This will give you slack and you can take the belt off both pulleys. Now pull the drum
forward. There you have the inner workings left. Now, there are 3 wheels. 2 black and 1 white. I would check the white one since you've already replaced the black ones. This is the pulley that provides tension when the motor is running (hence no noise when you take the belt off) I'm betting you'l find it does not turn freely (you should be able to spin it with your finger and have it coast to a stop insdead of stopping as soon as you take your finger off). You can get the replacement wheel from your local appliance parts store or on line from the manufatrues web site. However, if you do have to wait for the part, take the wheel off the shaft and wipe off the inside race of the wheel and the shaft for temporarily relife and useage.

This could be a lot of things. It could be the belt on the drum, the tension pulley on the belt or something stuck between the drum and the frame. To check it you need to unplug it and see if there is a panel under the door that comes off. There may be screws on the bottom of it. If it does not come off, the whole top lifts off.

Dryer makes loud noise when operated.

Get your model number and get a set of glides or drum bearings, whichever your unit uses. Don't let this go too long or your drum could be ruined.

The groaning sound seems as if the belt is broaken and the motor is trying to spin a little too fast because it doesn't have a load on it. Take a look to see if the belt is broken and if so, you can purchase a replacement belt at Lowes for approximately $7.00.
