Horizontal white lines on blurry still pictures - after 2 years. But the video is working properly.

Dear Friend,
I had also the same problem with my Canon A430. Mainly this problem is due to stuck of the camera shutter, always in open mode, images are overexposed due to this.
I had the problem with lens flex cable, which was partially damaged due to movement of lens and one coil was not working, due to this one shutter was not working and remains always in open mode. There are two coils, which operates the 2 shutters. I purchased the lens flex cable from ebay and replaced it, now it is working fine. Your problem may be the same.

My canon powershot a430 has always given me beautiful pics! I love it. but now I can only take pics inside. when I take pictures outdoors they come out white. what can I do to fix this problem?

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. By the way, recommend trying the pencil tapping method described in this article for a stuck "open" shutter.

Indoor pictures are fine; however, when I take a picture outside, it is "white." Have I accidently changed a setting? Thanks for your help.

First make sure your mode selector dial is set to the red camera WITHOUT an M next to it (ie it's in Auto and not Manual mode). If so...

Now the A430 is not capable of taking 15 second exposures as recommended for the fix. Instead try setting the camera to manual mode, turn off the flash, got to a darkened room, and take a picture. Open the battery door while the red and yellow light are flashing. If after many tries this does not work, then consider trying Fix #5a on the site. But do so with the camera turned off and the lens retracted to lessen the chance of damaging the lens mechanism.

Open the battery door while the red and yellow light are flashing. Repeat as the fix recommends, but please note that there may be only a small hope that this will work as the shutter may be stuck in the open position. This is harder to get unstuck than a closed shutter.

If the above doesn't work, consider attempting Fix 5a listed on the web page. There is some risk of damaging your camera with this fix, that's why I hesitate to recommend it until last.

Image too bright plus the white lines

Hi!
I had a similar problem with my powershot A430 recently. I took it to a canon service center and they identified the problem as "shutter unit problem". My cam was under warranty so they fixed it for free and also replaced my lens (even though i didnt ask for it!). :-)
Take your cam to canon; they will fix it. All the best!
